The Sunday of the Passion:
Palm Sunday Year C
April 10, 2022 Service of the Word

Mission Statement
As followers of Jesus Christ, our church is a community called to love, honour, worship, and serve God. We invite others to share our Christian journey as we grow in faith and engage in ministry in our town and mission in our world.

Palm Sunday procession: people walk with palms remembering Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem in song. In attentiveness to walking gently with our Savior and God’s Creation of Earth, we are using the local option of ferns and cedar as that is our local and ecological option!

Palm Sunday Processional:
(The people walk with palms remembering Jesus` entry into Jerusalem joining together in song)

Hymn: MV 128 When They Heard That Jesus Was Coming

1.When they heard that Jesus was coming
Sing hosanna to the chosen one
All the people went out to meet him
Sing hosanna to the chosen one
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna,
sing hosanna to the chosen one.

2. Spread their cloaks and branches before him
Sing hosanna to the chosen one
Children sand with palm branches waving
Sing hosanna to the chosen one
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna,
sing hosanna to the chosen one.

3. Blest is he, alike David before him,
Sing hosanna to the chosen one
Blest is he, God's blessing upon him,
Sing hosanna to the chosen one
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna,
sing hosanna to the chosen one.

4. Guiding cloud and pillar of fire,
Sing hosanna to the chosen one
Satan's foe and friend of the sinner,
Sing hosanna to the chosen one
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna,
sing hosanna to the chosen one.

5. Word of God, and first-born of people,
Sing hosanna to the chosen one
Promise kept, the crown of the creation,
Sing hosanna to the chosen one
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna,
sing hosanna to the chosen one.

6. Vision blest, and hope for the future,
Sing hosanna to the chosen one
God's beloved, radiant with glory,
Sing hosanna to the chosen one
Sing hosanna, sing hosanna,
sing hosanna to the chosen one.

Welcome and Announcements

Acknowledgment of Land

Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Opening Hymn: VU 126 Ride On, Ride On, the Time is Right

Ride on, ride on, the time is right:
the roadside crowds scream with delight;
palm branches mark the pilgrim way
where beggars squat and children play.

Ride on, ride on, your critics wait,
intrigue and rumour circulate;
new lies abound in word and jest,
and truth becomes a suspect guest.

Ride on, ride on, while well aware
that those who shout and wave and stare
are mortals who, with common breath,
can crave for life and lust for death.

Ride on, ride on, though blind with tears,
though voiceless now and deaf to jeers.
Your path is clear, though few can tell
their garments pave the road to hell.

Ride on, ride on, God's love demands.
Justice and peace lie in your hands.
Evil and angel voices rhyme:
You are the man and this the time.

Words and music: John L. Bell.

Dear friends, through Lent we have been preparing ... a crown of thorns and his thorn a cross.
...We pray we share the message of this truth and share in his resurrection and the new life offered in reconciliation.
Hosanna in the highest.

We Open Ourselves to Transformation: Sacred Scriptures

Hutłilala's! Listen deeply!

Hebrew Scripture: Isaiah 50:4–9a

Gospel Hymn: VU 145 O Sacred Head, Sore Wounded

O sacred head, sore wounded,
with grief and shame weighed down,
now scornfully surrounded
with thorns, thine only crown:
how art thou pale with anguish,
with sore abuse and scorn;
how does that visage languish
which once was bright as morn!

Thy grief and bitter passion
were all for sinners' gain;
mine, mine was the transgression,
but thine the cruel pain.
Lo, here I fall, my Saviour,
turn not from me thy face;
but look on me with favour,
and grant to me thy grace.

What language shall I borrow
to thank thee, dearest friend,
for this thy dying sorrow,
thy pity without end?
O make me thine forever;
and should I fainting be,
Lord, let me never, never
outlive my love to thee.

Be near me when I am dying,
O show thy cross to me;
and for my succour flying,
come, Lord, to set me free.
These eyes, new faith receiving,
from thee shall not remove,
for all who die believing,
die safely through thy love.

Words: Paul Gerhardt; trans. James Waddell Alexander, alt. Music: Hans Leo Hassler; harm. Johann Sebastian Bach.

Sermon/ Reflection

Words of Confession

Give us the courage, in this holy week, to journey with Jesus all the way to the cross, and there, risk everything – as Jesus did; to proclaim – as Jesus did – God’s love for all. Amen.

Words of Affirmation

Affirmation of Faith

We are not alone, we live in God’s world.
We believe in God:
who has created and is creating,
who has come in Jesus,
the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new,
who works in us and others
by the Spirit.
We trust in God.
We are called to be the Church:
to celebrate God’s presence,
to live with respect in Creation,
to love and serve others,
to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
our judge and our hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death,
God is with us.
We are not alone.
Thanks be to God.

A New Creed is a brief and well-loved affirmation of faith used widely in our worship (1968; rev. 1980, 1995).

Prayers of the People

In our Shared Ministry Church Cycles of prayer, we pray for ...
We pray for all in authority,...

MINUTE FOR MISSION/ PWRDF

Among the crowds so busy with the moment can we spot the woman shouting hosanna as she tries to forget the lack of food for her table?
We pray for the hungry.

In the chaos of the people laying coats on the road busy with the moment do we notice the one who remains silent lonely, even in a crowd?
We pray for the lonely.

In the moving hordes crying for salvation busy with the moment can we see the person who isn’t out for the day but whose home is that street?
We pray for the homeless.

In the sway of the masses eager to seem busy with the moment will we spot the one looking among the crowd for someone long gone?
We pray for those grieving.

In the movement of the pack caught up in hysteria busy with the moment can we recognize the one with wounds and hurt from a different violence?
We pray for those in conflict.

In the baying of the mob cheering without knowing why busy with the moment will we notice the change from hosanna to crucify and those who must suffer?
We pray for ourselves and why we are here. Amen

The Peace

My siblings in Christ, the peace of God be always with you.
And also with you.
(We greet one another in physically distant yet socially cohesive ways)

Hymn: VU 506 Take My Life and Let it Be

Take my life, and let it be
consecrated, all for thee;
take my moments and my days;
let them flow in ceaseless praise.

Take my hands, and let them move
at the impulse of thy love;
take my feet, and let them be
swift and purposeful for thee.

Take my lips, and let them be
filled with messages from thee;
take my intellect, and use
every power as thou shalt choose.

Take my will, and make it thine;
it shall be no longer mine;
take my heart, it is thine own;
it shall be thy royal throne.

Take my love; and I will pour
at thy feet its treasure store;
take myself, and I will be
ever, only, all for thee.

Words: Frances Ridley Havergal; Music: unknown

VU 541 Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen

Words: Thomas Ken; Music: Genevan Psalter

Prayer over the Gifts

Epilogue

And so the cross, that tree of brokenness and pain ....
...is the beginning of love. Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen

The Doxology

Glory to God,
whose power, working in us,
can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine.
Glory to God from generation to generation,
in the Church and in Christ Jesus,
for ever and ever. Amen

Hymn: MV 154 Deep In Our Hearts

Deep in our hearts there is a common vision;
Deep in our hearts there is a common song;
Deep in our hearts there is a common story,
telling Creation that we are one.

Deep in our hearts there is a common purpose;
Deep in our hearts there is a common goal;
Deep in our hearts there is a sacred message,
justice and peace in harmony.

Deep in our hearts there is a common longing;
Deep in our hearts there is a common theme;
Deep in our hearts there is a common current,
flowing to freedom like a stream.

Deep in our hearts there is a common vision;
Deep in our hearts there is a common song;
Deep in our hearts there is a common story,
telling Creation that we are one.

Words: John Oldham; music: Ron Klusmeier
