Mission Statement
As followers of Jesus the Christ, our church is a community called to love, honour, worship, and serve God. We invite others to share our Christian journey as we grow in faith and engage in ministry in our town and mission in our world.

Welcome and Announcements

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD
Leader: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
People: And also with you.

Almighty God,
to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn: MV 30 It’s A Song of Praise to the Maker

It’s a song of praise to the Maker,
the thrush sings high in the tree.
It’s a song of praise to the Maker,
the gray whale sings in the sea,
And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.

It’s a call of life to the Giver,
when waves and waterfalls roar.
It’s a call of life to the Giver,
when high tides break on the shore,
And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.

It’s a hymn of love to the Lover;
the bumblebees hum along.
It’s a hymn of love to the Lover;
the summer breeze joins the song,
And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.

It’s the chorus of all creation;
it’s sung by all living things.
It’s the chorus of all creation;
a song the universe sings,
And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.

Collect

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutlilala’s! Listen as God’s Word is proclaimed!

Isaiah 40: 25-31

Psalm 19 VU #740
Refrain 2: Glory and praise to God whose word brings life!
The heavens declare the victory of God; and the vault of the sky reveals God’s handiwork
One day speaks to another, and night shares its knowledge with night,
And this without speech or language; their voices are not heard.
But their sound goes out to all the lands, their words to the ends of the earth
R 2: Glory and praise to God whose word brings life!

In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun which comes out like a bridegroom from under the canopy, like an athlete eager to run the race.
Its rising is at one end of the sky, it runs its course to the other, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
R 2: Glory and praise to God whose word brings life!

God’s law is perfect, refreshing the soul,
God’s instruction is sure, giving wisdom to the simple;
God’s precepts are right, rejoicing the heart;
God’s commandment is pure giving light to the eyes;
God’s fear is clean, enduring forever;
God’s judgements are true, every one of them righteous
More desirable than gold, even much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey, pure honey from the comb.
R2: Glory and praise to God whose word brings life!

By them is your servant warned,
For in keeping them there is great reward.
But who can discern unwitting sins?
O cleanse me from my secret faults.
Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the better of me.
Then shall I be clean and innocent of great offense
R2: Glory and praise to God whose word brings life!
All: Let the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O God, my strength and my redeemer.

Refrain 2 Words: Public Domain. Music: Geoffrey Shaw.

Philippians 4: 4-9

Hymn: VU 626 I Heard the Voice of Jesus

 I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto me and rest;
lay down, O weary one, lay down
your head upon my breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
weary and worn and sad;
I found in him a resting place,
and he has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold, I freely give
the living water; thirsty one,
stoop down and drink and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
of that life-giving stream;
my thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
and now I live in him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s light;
look unto me, your morn shall rise,
and all your days be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
in him my star, my sun;
and in that light of life I’ll walk
till travelling days are done.

Words: Horatius Bonar, Music: English/Irish traditional melody, arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams

One: God be with you.
All: And also with you.
One: The Good News of Jesus according to John
All: Glory to you, Jesus the Christ.

All: Praise to you, Jesus the Christ.

Sermon Reflection

Reflective Hymn: VU 308 Many and Great, O God

Many and great, O God, are your works,
Maker of earth and sky.
Your hands have set the heavens with stars,
your fingers spread the mountains and plains.
Lo, at your word the waters were formed;
deep seas obey your voice.

Grant unto us communion with you,
O star-abiding one.
Come unto us and dwell with us,
with you are found the gifts of life.
Bless us with life that has no end,
eternal life with you.

Words and music: Dakota hymn (adapted), Joseph R. Renville

Prayers of the People
Creator and Redeemer, as we approach you in prayer, make us walk in beauty and balance, make us open our hearts and minds, make us speak the truth. We pray first for your Community, the Church, The Body of Christ. We pray for all our relatives in the circle of life throughout all Creation; for those chosen to be our leaders and teachers.

Intercessions …
At the bidding: Let us pray to God.
Please respond: Open our hearts, hear our prayer, and help us.

Draw your Church together, O Lord, into one great company of disciples, together following Christ into every walk of life, together serving you in your mission in the world, and together witnessing to your love on every continent and island of your creation. We ask this in the name of the Risen Christ in whom we are one.
Amen

Confession and Absolution
Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness.
Silence is kept.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

Offertory Hymn: MV 37 Each Blade of Grass

Each blade of grass, ev’ry wing that soars,
the waves that sweep across a distant shore,
make full the circle of God.
Each laughing child, ev’ry gentle eye,
a forest lit beneath a moon-lit sky,
make full the circle of God.

Each silent paw, ev’ry rounded stone,
the buzz that echoes from a honey’d comb,
make full the circle of God.
Each fire-brimmed star, ev’ry out-stretched hand,
the wind that leaps and sails across the land,
make full the circle of God.

Each icy peak, ev’ry patterned shell,
the joyous chorus that the dawn foretells,
make full the circle of God.
Each cosmic hue, ev’ry creature’s way,
all form the beauty of this vast array,
making full the circle of God.

Words: Keri K. Wehlander Music: Anonymous. From The United States’ Sacred Harmony, adapted: arrangement Linnea Good.

Response: VU 541 Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise God, all creatures high and low;
give thanks to God in love made known:
Creator, Word and Spirit One! Amen

Words: adapted from Thomas Ken Music: Louis Bourgeois, in Genevan Psalter.

Prayer over the Gifts

The Great Thanksgiving
May God be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to God.
Let us give thanks to God our Creator.
It is right to offer thanks and praise.

It is right to give you thanks and praise, O Lord, our God, sustainer of the universe, you are worthy of glory and praise.
Glory to you for ever and ever.

At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home; by your will they were created and have their being.
Glory to you for ever and ever.

From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill; you made us the stewards of creation.
Glory to you for ever and ever.

But we turn against you, and betray your trust;  ...  By his death he opened to us the way of freedom and peace.
Glory to you for ever and ever.

Therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed are you, Lord our God, for sending us Jesus, the Christ,  ...  Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Glory to you for ever and ever.

Gracious God, we recall ...  that we who eat and drink at this holy table may share the divine life of Christ our Lord.
Glory to you for ever and ever.

Pour out your Spirit upon the whole earth  .... through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ, all honour and glory are yours, creator of all.
Glory to you for ever and ever. Amen

And now as our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Sharing of the Elements
We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
We, being many, are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

So, come to this meal, you who have much faith and you who would like to have more. You who have been to this sacrament often, and you who have not been for a long time. You who have tried to follow Jesus, and you who have failed. Come. It is Christ who invites us to meet him here. These are the gifts of God for the people of God.
Thanks be to God
(Please remain in at your seat, communion will be brought to you.)

(From Communion Blessing, Christopher Peters)
The Bread: We are One in the Love of Christ.
The Cup: We are One in the Cup of Salvation.

Prayer after Communion
ALL Great Creator, you have fed us with bread from heaven. Continue to renew us in your truth, to give light to our minds, strength to our bodies, and seal us with your Holy Spirit. We ask this in Christ’s name. Amen.

Hymn: VU 679 Let There Be Light

Let there be light,
let there be understanding,
let all the nations gather,
let them be face to face;

open our lips,
open our minds to ponder,
open the way to concord
opening into grace;

perish the sword,
perish the angry judgement,
perish the bombs and hunger,
perish the fight for gain;

hallow our love,
hallow the deaths of martyrs,
hallow their holy freedom,
hallowed be your name;

your kingdom come,
your spirit turn to language,
your people speak together,
your spirit never fade;

let there be light,
open our hearts to wonder,
perish the way of terror,
hallow the world God made.

Words: Frances Wheeler Davis, Music: Robert J.B. Fleming

Glory to God,
whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.
