Call to Worship

Opening Prayer

Hymn:
VU 356 Seek Ye First

Seek ye first the kingdom of God
and God’s righteousness,
and all these things shall be added unto you.
Hal-le-lu, hal-le-lu-jah.

Hal-le-lu-jah,
Hal-le-lu-jah,
Hal-le-lu-jah,
Hal-le-lu, hal-le-lu-jah.

Ask and it shall be given unto you;
seek and you shall find;
knock and the door shall be opened unto you.
Hal-le-lu, hal-le-lu-jah.

Hal-le-lu-jah,
Hal-le-lu-jah,
Hal-le-lu-jah,
Hal-le-lu, hal-le-lu-jah.

We do not live by bread alone,
but by every word
that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Hal-le-lu, hal-le-lu-jah.

Hal-le-lu-jah,
Hal-le-lu-jah,
Hal-le-lu-jah,
Hal-le-lu, hal-le-lu-jah.

Prayer of the Day

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutlilala’s! Listen deeply!
Hebrew Scriptures: Hosea 11: 1-11

Psalm 107
VU 831 (Part One and Part Four)

Refrain: O give thanks to God for steadfast love.
O give thanks, for God is gracious;
God’s steadfast love endures for ever.
Let the redeemed of God say so, those redeemed from trouble,
whom God gathered in from the lands,
from the east and the west,
from the north and the south.
R: O give thanks to God for steadfast love.

Some lost their way in desert wastes, finding no place to settle;
hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.
Then they cried to you, God, in their trouble; you rescued them from their distress.
You led them by a straight path, till they reached a place to settle.
Let them thank you, O God, for your steadfast love, for the wonders you do for us.
For you satisfy the thirsty, and fill the hungry with good things.
R: O give thanks to God for steadfast love.

You turn rivers into desert, springs of water into thirsty ground.
A fruitful land you make a salty waste, because of the wickedness of its inhabitants.
But you turn desert into standing pools, dry land into springs of water,
to give the hungry a home, a place where they can settle.
They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest.
You bless them and their numbers increase. You do not let their herds diminish.
Whoever is wise, ponder these things.
Consider God’s unfailing love.
R: O give thanks to God for steadfast love.

Epistle: Colossians 3: 1-11

Hymn:
MV 37 Each Blade of Grass

Each blade of grass, ev’ry wing that soars,
the waves that sweep across a distant shore,
make full the circle of God.
Each laughing child, ev’ry gentle eye,
a forest lit beneath a moon-lit sky,
make full the circle of God.

Each silent paw, ev’ry rounded stone,
the buzz that echoes from a honey’d comb,
make full the circle of God.
Each fire-brimmed star, ev’ry out-stretched hand,
the wind that leaps and sails across the land,
make full the circle of God.

Each icy peak, ev’ry patterned shell,
the joyous chorus that the dawn foretells,
make full the circle of God.
Each cosmic hue, ev’ry creature’s way,
all form the beauty of this vast array,
making full the circle of God.

Here what the spirit is saying to the church
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Confession
Blessing, blessed God, we pray to you for “our daily bread,” for what we need. But in our worrying, we crave even more. In our fear that there may not be enough, we desire more than we need. In our hope to evade trouble, we look for refuge and rescue in amassing more and more things.
Forgive us, dear God, for the times when our anxieties outweigh our sense. Forgive us when we think of ourselves but forget to think of others. Forgive us that we do not seek our safety in you. Unclench our fists. Open our hearts. Amen.

Words of Affirmation
God is our refuge, our rock, our strength. God hears our repentance,
and we know ourselves forgiven. Amen.

Prayers in our Common Life
… please add your own prayers aloud or in the silence of your heart as you feel called to do …

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

Invitation to the Offering

Hymn:
VU 460 All Who Hunger

All who hunger gather gladly;
holy manna is our bread.
Come from wilderness and wandering.
Here, in truth, we will be fed.
You that yearn for days of fullness,
all around us is our food.
Taste and see the grace eternal.
Taste and see that God is good.

All who hunger, never strangers;
seeker, be a welcome guest.
Come from restlessness and roaming.
Here, in joy, we keep the feast.
We that once were lost and scattered
in communion’s love have stood.
Taste and see the grace eternal.
Taste and see that God is good.

All who hunger, sing together;
Jesus Christ is living bread.
Come from loneliness and longing.
Here, in peace, we have been led.
Blest are those who from this table
live their days in gratitude.
Taste and see the grace eternal.
Taste and see that God is good.

Response:
MV 115 Behold, Behold, I Make All Things New

Behold, (behold,) behold, (behold,) I make all things new,
beginning with you and starting from today.
Behold, (behold,) behold, (behold,) I make all things new,
my promise is true, for I am Christ the way.

Words and music: John L Bell.

Prayer of Dedication or Offering Prayer

The Sacred Meal- Communion

May God be with us.
God is here among us.
Let us open our hearts to God.
We open them to God and to one another.
Let us give thanks to God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.

God of Jews and Samaritans; God of Mary and Martha; ...

...We join in this hymn of praise and thanksgiving:
Holy, holy, holy God, power of life and love! Heaven and earth are full of your glory! Hosanna through the ages!
Blest is the One who comes to bring your justice to earth.

...Likewise after supper, he took the cup saying, “This is the new covenant, remember me.”
We proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our hope.

...may we be strengthened to go forth in Christ’s name, offering forgiveness and wholeness to all people.
Amen.

And now as our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Please remain in at your seat, communion will be brought to you and we will consume at the same time.)

Sharing of the elements
As we share the bread, we recall that God will always love us.
As we share the ‘fruit’, we recall that God will never leave us.

Prayer after Communion
Gracious God, at this holy table,
we share in the life of Christ. May we who have been nourished by holy things bear witness to his light, and share in his ministry; this day, every day, in every way. Amen.

Hymn:
MV 145 Draw the Circle Wide

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
standing side by side,
draw the circle wide.

God the still point of the circle,
‘round whom all creation turns;
nothing lost, but held forever,
in God’s gracious arms.

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
standing side by side,
draw the circle wide.

Let our hearts touch far horizons,
so encompass great and small;
let our loving know no borders,
faithful to God’s call.

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
standing side by side,
draw the circle wide.

Let the dreams we dream be larger,
than we’ve ever dreamed before;
let the dream of Christ be in us,
open every door.

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
standing side by side,
draw the circle wide.
