THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.
And also with you.

Almighty God,
to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn:
VU 686 (tune VU 651)
God O Grace and God of Glory

God of grace and God of glory,
on your people pour your power;
now fulfil your church’s story;
bring its bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the facing of this hour.
For the facing of this hour.

Lo! the hosts of evil round us,
scorn your Christ, assail your ways.
fears and doubts too long have bound us,
free our hearts to work and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the living of these days.
For the living of these days.

Cure your children’s warring madness,
bend our pride to your control;
shame our wanton selfish gladness,
rich in goods and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.
Lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.

Set our feet on lofty places,
gird our lives that they may be
armoured with all Christ-like graces,
pledged to set all captives free.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
that we fail not them nor thee.
That we fail not them nor thee.

Words: Harry Emerson Fosdick Music: John Hughes

Collect

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutlilala’s! Listen as God’s Word is proclaimed!
Hebrew Scripture: Isaiah 5: 1-7

Psalm 80: 1-2, 8-19 VU 794-795 (Part 2)
Refrain: Your face, God shine on us and give us peace.
Shepherd of Israel, hear us,
you who lead Joseph like a flock, you who are enthroned amidst the cherubim.
Shine forth before Ephraim, Benjamin and Manasseh;
stir up your might, come and save us.
R: Your face, God shine on us and give us peace.

You brought a vine out of Egypt, you drove out the nations and planted it.
You cleared the ground for it; it sank deep roots, and filled the land.
The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches.
It stretched out its branches as far as the Sea, and its shoots as far as the River.
Why then have you broken down its enclosure, so that all who go by pluck its grapes?
The boar from the forest roots it up, and the beasts of the field devour it.
R: Your face, God shine on us and give us peace.

Turn to us again, God of hosts, look down from heaven and see.
Bestow your care on this vine, on the stock which your right hand planted.
As for those who set it on fire, who cut it down, may they perish at the frown of your face.
Let your hand rest on the one by your side, on the one you have made strong for yourself.
Then we will never forsake you;
give us life, and we will call on your name.
R: Your face, God shine on us and give us peace.

Refrain words and music: John Wainright.

HYMN:
MV 120 My Soul Cries Out

My soul cries out with a joyful shout
that the God of my heart is great,
And my spirit sings of the wondrous things
that you bring to the ones who wait.
You fixed your sight on your servant's plight,
and my weakness you did not spurn,
so from east to west shall my name be blest.
Could the world be about to turn?

My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn!

Though I am small, my God, my all,
you work great things in me,
and your mercy will last from the depths of the past
to the end of the age to be.
Your very name puts the proud to shame,
and to those who would for you yearn,
you will show your might, put the strong to flight,
for the world is about to turn.

My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn!

From the halls of power to the fortress tower,
not a stone will be left on stone.
Let the king beware for your justice tears
ev'ry tyrant from his throne.
The hungry poor shall weep no more,
for the food they can never earn;
there are tables spread, ev'ry mouth be fed,
for the world is about to turn.

My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn!

Though the nations rage from age to age,
we remember who holds us fast:
God's mercy must deliver us
from the conqueror's crushing grasp.
This saving word that our forebears heard
is the promise which holds us bound,
‘til the spear and rod can be crushed by God,
who is turning the world around.

My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn!

Words and arrangement: Rory Cooney, Music: traditional melody, Ireland.

Sermon Reflection

Reflective Hymn:
MV 85 Take, O Take Me as I Am x3

Take, O take me as I am;
summon out what I shall be;
set your seal upon my heart and live in me.

Words: John L. Bell and Graham Maule; Music: John L Bell.

Prayers of the People
(Let us offer our prayers to the source of all love and all life,
At the bidding: In your mercy;
Please respond: “God, hear our prayer.”)

Gracious God, the well-spring of life, pour into our hearts the living water of your grace. By your light we see light. Increase our faith, and grant that we may walk in the brightness of your presence; through Jesus the Christ. Amen

Confession and Absolution
Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s forgiveness.
Silence is kept.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus the Christ. Amen

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

Offertory HYMN:
VU 684 Make Me a Channel of Your Peace

Make me a channel of your peace:
where there is hatred let me bring your love;
where there is injury your healing power,
And where there's doubt true faith in you.

O Spirit grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace:
where there's despair in life let me bring hope;
where there is darkness, only light;
and where there's sadness, ever joy.

O Spirit grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving to all that we receive,
and in dying that we're born to eternal life.

Words: attributed to St. Francis; Music: Sebastian Temple; arrangement Betty Pulkingham.

Responsive Hymn:
MV 191 What Can I Do?

What can I do? What can I bring?
What can I say? What can I sing?
I’ll sing with joy. I’ll say a prayer
I’ll bring my love, I’ll do my share.

Words and music: Paul Rumbolt and Michelle McCarthy; arr. Alan C. Whitmore.

Prayer over the Gifts

The Great Thanksgiving
May God be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to God.
Let us give thanks to God our Creator.
It is right to offer thanks and praise.

Eternal God, Source of all being, ...
...making the first last, and the last first.

Therefore we raise our voices with angels and archangels, forever praising you and saying (singing):

SANCTUS: St. Bride Setting

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord,
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord,
God of pow’r and might,
God of pow’r and might,
Heaven and earth are full,
Heaven and earth are full,
are full of your glory.
are full of your glory.

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord,
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord,
God of pow’r and might,
God of pow’r and might,
Heaven and earth are full,
Heaven and earth are full,
are full of your glory.
are full of your glory.

Blessed is the one who comes
Blessed is the one who comes
In the name of the Lord!
In the name of the Lord!
Hosanna in the Highest!
Hosanna in the Highest!
Hosanna in the Highest!
Hosanna in the Highest!
Hosanna in the Highest!
Hosanna in the Highest!

(Tune: John L. Bell)

Blessed are you, O Holy One: when Hagar was driven into the wilderness you followed her and gave her hope. When Joseph was sold into bondage, you turned malice to your people’s good.

When you called Israel out of slavery, you brought them through the wilderness into the promised land. When your people were taken into exile you wept with them by the river of Babylon and carried them home.
Restore us, O God, let your face shine!

At the right time you sent your Anointed One...
...Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Loving and Holy One, recalling Christ’s death and resurrection, we offer you these gifts, longing for the bread of tomorrow and the wine of the age to come. Therefore we proclaim our hope.
Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory.

Pour out your Spirit on these gifts that through them you may sustain us in our hunger for your peace. We hold before you all whose lives are marked by suffering, our sisters and brothers. When we are broken and cast aside, embrace us in your love.
Restore us, O God, let your face shine!

Through Christ, with Christ, and in Christ in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O Source of all life, now and for ever. Amen.

And now as our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Sharing of the Elements
“I am the bread of live,” says the Lord. “Whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never thirst.”
Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who trust in him!

The gifts of God for the People of God.
Thanks be to God

The Bread: We are One in the Love of Christ.
The Cup: We are One in the Cup of Salvation.

Prayer after Communion

HYMN:
VU 639 One More Step Along the World I Go

One more step along the world I go,
one more step along the world I go,
from the old things to the new,
keep me travelling along with you:
And it's from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

Round the corners of the world I turn,
more and more about the world I learn;
all the new things that I see
you'll be looking at along with me.
And it's from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

As I travel through the bad and good,
keep me travelling the way I should;
where I see no way to go
you'll be telling me the way, I know:
And it's from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

Give me courage when the world is rough,
keep me loving though the world is tough;
leap and sing in all I do,
keep me travelling along with you:
And it's from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

You are older than the world can be,
you are younger than the life in me,
ever old and ever new,
keep me travelling along with you:
And it's from the old I travel to the new;
keep me travelling along with you.

Words and music: Sydney Carter.

Glory to God,
whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Dismissal
