THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship
God, maker of plants and animals and all things, invites us to this place. We are glad to be here. God, who has created all things for our goodness, invites us to this place. We are glad to be here. God, who has called us to care for Earth and all its inhabitants, invites us to this place. We are glad to be here.
Come, let us worship God!

Opening Prayer

Hymn:
MV 30 It’s a Song of Praise to the Maker

It’s a song of praise to the Maker,
the thrush sings high in the tree.
It’s a song of praise to the Maker,
the gray whale sings in the sea,

And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.
It’s a call of life to the Giver,
when waves and waterfalls roar.
It’s a call of life to the Giver,
when high tides break on the shore,

And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.
It’s a hymn of love to the Lover;
the bumblebees hum along.

It’s a hymn of love to the Lover;
the summer breeze joins the song,
And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.
It’s the chorus of all creation;
it’s sung by all living things.

It’s the chorus of all creation;
a song the universe sings,
And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.

Words: Ruth Duck; Music: Ron Klusmeier

Prayer of the Day:
Creating God,
we stand in awe of how everything connects through the webs of life. Through the wilds, we learn so much about you and each other. We praise you for what you have created and pray we will enjoy it with honour and respect. Amen.

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutlilala’s! Listen deeply!
Hebrew Scriptures: Jeremiah 4: 11-12, 22-28

Psalm 14 VU 735
Refrain: Dear God, who loves all human kind, forgive our foolish ways.
The foolish have spoken in their heart, and said “There is no God.”
They are corrupt; they do abominable things; there is no one who does what is good.
God looks down from heaven upon us all, to see if any are wise and seek after God.
But all have gone astray; all alike are corrupted; there is no one who does good; no, not one.
R: Dear God, who loves all human kind, forgive our foolish ways.

Have they no knowledge, all those who do evil?
They devour my people like so much bread, and do not pray to God.
But see, they will tremble with fear, for God is on the side of the righteous.
Do not mock the hope of the poor, for God is their refuge.
O that deliverance for God’s people would come forth from Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of the people, then shall Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad.
R: Dear God, who loves all human kind, forgive our foolish ways.

Epistle:1 Timothy 1: 12-17

Hymn:
MV 37 Each Blade of Grass

Each blade of grass, ev’ry wing that soars,
the waves that sweep across a distant shore,
make full the circle of God.
Each laughing child, ev’ry gentle eye,
a forest lit beneath a moon-lit sky,
make full the circle of God.

Each silent paw, ev’ry rounded stone,
the buzz that echoes from a honey’d comb,
make full the circle of God.
Each fire-brimmed star, ev’ry out-stretched hand,
the wind that leaps and sails across the land,
make full the circle of God.

Each icy peak, ev’ry patterned shell,
the joyous chorus that the dawn foretells,
make full the circle of God.
Each cosmic hue, ev’ry creature’s way,
all form the beauty of this vast array,
making full the circle of God.

Words: Keri K. Wehlander Music: Anonymous. From The United States’ Sacred Harmony, adapted: arrangement Linnea Good.

Gospel: Luke 15: 1-10
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Confession
God of hawk and puffin, koala, and panda, of moose and squirrel, of tiger and cobra; God of violet and daffodil, gum tree and redwood, of mountain meadows and rainforest jungles: we are in awe of all you have done for us.

You created a world of plants and animals that can live in such wondrous harmony; yet too often we exploit one another, we devastate, and we leave things in ruin. Forgive us and guide us in the restoration of the harmony you intended. Amen.

Words of Affirmation

HYMN: (NWioW) #58
The Thirsty Cry for Water, Lord

The thirsty cry for water, Lord;
The hungry plead for bread.
And many long to rise again
Where hope, cast down lies dead.

The cup of water poured in love
The pangs of thirst will still.
The bread of earth You bid us share,
The famished child can fill.

But help us also hear the cry
Of hung’ring, thirsting hearts
For living water, bread of life
You grace alone imparts.

And come to us, O risen Christ,
our restless souls relieve;
And satisfy our starving hearts
That we may rise and live.

Text: Herman G. Stuempfle, Jr. Tune: Virginia Harmony; harmony Edwin O. Excell

Prayers in our Common Life
Minute for Mission/ PWRDF
For our United Church and Anglican Church families
(… please add your own prayers aloud or in the silence of your heart as invited…)

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

Hymn:
MV 173 Put Peace into Each Other’s Hands
(alternate verses 4 and 5 for communion)

Put peace into each other’s hands
and like a treasure hold it,
protect it like a candle flame,
with tenderness enfold it.

Put peace into each other’s hands
with loving expectation;
be gentle in your words and ways,
in touch with God’s creation.

Put peace into each other’s hands
like bread we break for sharing;
look people warmly in the eye;
our life is meant for caring.

As a communion, shape your hands
into a waiting cradle;
the gift of Christ receive, revere,
united round the table.

Put Christ into each other’s hands;
he is love’s deepest measure;
in love make peace, give peace a chance,
and share it like a treasure.

Words: Fred Kaan; Music: Ron Klusmeier.

Response:
VU 581 When We Are Living (verse 2)

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

Prayer of dedication or offering prayer

The Sacred Meal- Communion
You, God of oceans – commanded the sea to part and form dry land. ...

... Bless them. Bless us.
Bless all the others with whom we share this delicate world. Amen.

Gracious God, when you created the world, you dedicated us to be part of the balance of all good things. Today, we commit ourselves anew to this purpose and ask your blessing upon our renewed commitment. Help us to continue to delight in the glory of the plants and animals you have given us to share life. And lead us in the ways of life, in communion with all Creation. Amen

And now as our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Please remain in at your seat, communion will be brought to you and we will consume at the same time.)

Prayer after Communion

Hymn:
MV 145 Draw the Circle Wide

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
standing side by side,
draw the circle wide.

God the still point of the circle,
‘round whom all creation turns;
nothing lost, but held forever,
in God’s gracious arms.

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
standing side by side,
draw the circle wide.

Let our hearts touch far horizons,
so encompass great and small;
let our loving know no borders,
faithful to God’s call.

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
standing side by side,
draw the circle wide.

Let the dreams we dream be larger,
than we’ve ever dreamed before;
let the dream of Christ be in us,
open every door.

Draw the circle wide.
Draw it wider still.
Let this be our song,
no one stands alone,
standing side by side,
draw the circle wide.

Words and music: Gordon Light

Blessing:
May the God who frees the hawk to soar, who waters the tree to shelter the bird, who clothes the grass with lilies, open your spirit to the wisdom and joy abundant in Creation, and freely given to you in grace. Amen.
AMEN. ALLELUIA! Gilakas’la!

Three-fold Amen

First Nations Version: Luke 15: 1-10

The Worth of the Lost Ones
Tribal tax collectors and other outcassts would often gather around Creator Sets Free (Jesus) to listen to him tell his stories. But the Separated Ones (Pharisees) and scroll keepers would complain about this.  They would say things like, “This man welcomes outcasts to join him at the table and eat with him.”  On one of those occasions Creator Sets Free (Jesus) answered them with a story. “Who among you, if you were caring for one hundred sheep and one of the lambs wandered away, would not leave the ninety-nine and search for that lost lamb until you found it?  Wuld you not put that lamb on your shoulders, hurry home, and invite your friends to a selebration, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost lamb!’?” “In the same way, the spirit-world above will celebrate even more over one outcast who finds the way back home than for ninety-nine who are already safely there.” “Let me say it another way,” he expained.  “What maan who has ten eagle feathers and loses one would not light a torch, sweep the house clean, and look everywhere until he found it?  Then, after he finds it, would he not gather his friends together for a celebration?  In the same way, Creator’s spirit-messengers will celebrate when even one outcast finds the way back home.”

Native American Chief Seattle: “All things share the same breath – the beast, the tree, the human. The air shares its spirit with all the life it supports.” This truth reminds us that we are interconnected. We praise God for what we learn from Creation. We are part of that Creation, part of this incredible world. How do we offer praise to God for our interdependence? How do we praise God for Creation?
