Mission Statement
As followers of Jesus Christ, our church is a community called to love, honour, worship, and serve God. We invite others to share our Christian journey as we grow in faith and engage in ministry in our town and mission in our world.

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship
When we are reluctant to dip our toes into faith’s river,
Jesus comes to teach us how to swim.
When we are hesitant to cup our hands to drink from the fountain of grace,
Jesus comes to reach in and splash our faces with God’s joy.
When we are unwilling to be the pipeline of hope,
Jesus comes to turn on the faucets God has installed in our hearts.
Come, let us worship.

*Hymn: VU 229 God of the Sparrow

God of the sparrow God of the whale
God of the swirling stars
How does the creature say Awe
How does the creature say Praise

God of the earthquake God of the storm
God of the trumpet blast
How does the creature cry Woe
How does the creature cry Save

God of the rainbow God of the cross
God of the empty grave
How does the creature say Grace
How does the creature say Thanks

God of the hungry God of the sick
God of the prodigal
How does the creature say Care
How does the creature say Life

God of the neighbour God of the foe
God of the pruning hook
How does the creature say Love
How does the creature say Peace

God of the ages God of the hand
God of the loving heart
How do your children say Joy
How do your children say Home.

Opening Prayer
When we clasp the past tight to our fading memories, you come,
Glory of creation: to strip us bare of all pride and pretence, with your future;
to slip the latch on the fears and worries that keep us bound from following you; to stand with us when death and sin try to bully us.
And we cry, “Glory!”
When our faith flickers in the shadows of chaos, you come, Servant of all: to be the grace-crier through the streets of our hearts; to teach eager students the songs of peace and hope; to open eyes heavy-lidded by indifference.
And we cry, “Glory!”

When we are dubious about being disciples, you come, Baptism’s Spirit: to journey with peace-walkers through the world’s violent streets; to strengthen us when we are bent by doubt; to anoint us with rivers of grace, hope, and reconciliation.
And we cry, “Glory!”
Prayer of the Day

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED

Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as Scripture is read.
Hebrew Scripture: Isaiah 42: 1-9

Psalm 29 VU 756
Refrain: Glory, glory, glory to our God!
Ascribe to God, you powers of the heaven, ascribe to God all glory and strength!
Ascribe due honour to God’s holy name, and worship in the beauty of holiness.
R: Glory, glory, glory to our God!

God’s voice is over the waters – God’s glory thundering across the great waters.
God’s voice is power, God’s voice is full of majesty.
God’s voice shatters the cedars, splinters the cedars of Lebanon.
God’s voice makes Lebanon skip like a calf, Mount Hermon stampede like a wild young bull.
God’s voice forks into tongues of fire, God’s voice shakes the wilderness, sets trembling the wilderness of Kadesh.
God’s voice causes the oaks to whirl, stripping the forest bare; and in the temple all cry: Glory!
R: Glory, glory, glory to our God!

God sits enthroned above the waters,
God is enthroned as sovereign forever.
You give strength to your people, O God.
Now give to your people the blessing of peace.
R: Glory, glory, glory to our God!

Epistle: Acts 10: 34-43

*Hymn: VU 200 O Holy Spirit, by Whose Breath

O Holy Spirit, by whose breath
life rises vibrant out of death:
come to create, renew, inspire;
come, kindle in our hearts your fire.

You are the seeker's sure resource,
of burning love the living source,
protector in the midst of strife,
source and sustainer of all life.

In you God's energy is shown,
to us your varied gifts make known.
Teach us to speak; teach us to hear;
yours is the tongue and yours the ear.

Flood our dull senses with your light;
in mutual love our hearts unite.
Your power the whole creation fills;
confirm our weak, uncertain wills.

From inner strife grant us release;
turn nations to the ways of peace.
To fuller life your people bring
that as one body we may sing:
Praise to God, to Christ the Word,
and to the Spirit: all adored. Amen.

Gospel: Matthew 3: 13-17
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church!
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Prayer of confession
You would have all people hear of your grace, servant God,
but we hinder your efforts by hoarding the word for ourselves.
You would have hope flow through our neighbourhoods,
but we thwart your plans by damming up hope in our hearts.
You would have us skip into your realm, but we frustrate your future by clinging so tightly to those grudges we have carried for so long.
Have mercy on us, Shaker of our wildernesses, and unlock the shuttered doors of our hearts. Remind us that at our baptism you touch us with the waters of life, promise to be with us always, and call us your beloved, even as you sang your joy to Jesus the Christ, at the waters of the Jordan.
(Silence is kept.)

Words of affirmation
You know the good news God has proclaimed to you: we are called to let go of the past, and to walk, hand in hand with the Spirit, into the reign of God. God forgives us, accepts us, and sends us forth to do good and to testify about the One who baptizes us in the water and the Spirit. Thanks be to God. Amen.

Prayers of the People
Minute for Mission

Prayer response:
Gracious God,
we come to the waters of mercy.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.
(We share the peace in physically distant yet socially cohesive ways).

*Hymn: VU 460 All Who Hunger

All who hunger gather gladly;
holy manna is our bread.
Come from wilderness and wandering.
Here, in truth, we will be fed.
You that yearn for days of fullness,
all around us is our food.
Taste and see the grace eternal.
Taste and see that God is good.

All who hunger, never strangers;
seeker, be a welcome guest.
Come from restlessness and roaming.
Here, in joy, we keep the feast.
We that once were lost and scattered
in communion’s love have stood.
Taste and see the grace eternal.
Taste and see that God is good.

All who hunger, sing together;
Jesus Christ is living bread.
Come from loneliness and longing.
Here, in peace, we have been led.
Blest are those who from this table
live their days in gratitude.
Taste and see the grace eternal.
Taste and see that God is good.

*Response:
VU 581 When We Are Living verse 2

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

*Hymn: VU 380 She Comes Sailing on the Wind verses 1-4

She comes sailing on the wind, her wings flashing in the sun;
on a journey just begun, she flies on.
And in the passage of her flight, her song rings out through the night,
full of laughter, full of light, she flies on.

Silent waters rocking on the morning of our birth,
like an empty cradle waiting to be filled.
And from the heart of God the spirit moved upon the earth,
like a mother breathing life into her child.

Many were the dreamers whose eyes were given sight
when the Spirit filled their dreams with life and form.
Deserts turned to gardens, broken hearts found new delight,
and then down the ages still she flew on.

She comes sailing on the wind, her wings flashing in the sun;
on a journey just begun, she flies on.
And in the passage of her flight, her song rings out through the night,
full of laughter, full of light, she flies on.

To a gentle girl in Galilee, a gentle breeze she came,
a whisper softly calling in the dark,
the promise of a child of peace whose reign would never end,
Mary sang the Spirit song within her heart.

Flying to the river, she waited circling high
above the child now grown so full of grace.
As he rose up from the water, she swept down from the sky,
and she carried him away in her embrace.

She comes sailing on the wind, her wings flashing in the sun;
on a journey just begun, she flies on.
And in the passage of her flight, her song rings out through the night,
full of laughter, full of light, she flies on.

Sending Forth:
God, lead us, that we may stand firm in faith for justice.
Teach us love, teach us compassion. Above all, out of love and compassion, teach us to act! AMEN. Gilakas’la

*Three-fold Amen
