THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

In this time and place
We gather on the ancestral territories of Kwakwaka'wakw, Nuu-chah-nulth and Coast Salish peoples.
From many places and peoples we come to this house in prayer.
In this time and place
We gather in the name of the living God.
We meet in the presence of Jesus Christ, risen and alive.
In this time and place
We gather with the community of faith around the globe and across the ages.
In this time and place heaven and earth are one.
In this time and place
We are not alone, but one in Christ.
Knit together in the unity of the Spirit.
In this time and place
Hallowed, expectant, one people in God.
In the name of the Holy and Blessed One,
+Creator, Redeemer, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Centering Stillness
Let us hold this moment open to the Spirit of God. (silence)

*Hymn:
VU 264 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light in accessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice, like mountains, high soaring above
thy clouds, which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life thou givest, to both great and small,
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
then wither and perish but naught changeth thee!

Thou reignest in glory, thou rulest in light;
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all praise we would render, O help us to see
‘tis only the splendor of light hideth thee!

Collect

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply to scripture.

Hebrew Scripture Isaiah 58; 1-9a

Psalm 112: 1-9 VU 834
Refrain: The just shall trust in God alone.
Blessed are those who fear God,
who greatly delight in God’s commandments.
Their descendants will be mighty in the land, the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Riches and plenty shall be in their house, their righteousness enduring forever.
They are a light in the darkness for the upright, being gracious, compassionate and just.
It goes well with those who lend generously, who conduct their affairs with justice.
R: The just shall trust in God alone.

For the righteous will never be shaken; they will be kept in remembrance for ever.
They will not live in fear of bad news; with resolute heart they trust in God.
Their heart is steady, they do not fear; in the end they will see their enemies’ downfall.
They distribute freely to the poor, their righteousness enduring forever; they will hold up their heads in honour.
R: The just shall trust in God alone.

Epistle: 1 Corinthians 2: 1-12

*Hymn:
VU 356 Seek Ye First

Seek ye first the kingdom of God
and God’s righteousness,
and all these things shall be added unto you.
Hal-le-lu, hal-le-lu-jah.

Ask and it shall be given unto you;
seek and you shall find;
knock and the door shall be opened unto you.
Hal-le-lu, hal-le-lu-jah.

We do not live by bread alone,
but by every word
that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Hal-le-lu, hal-le-lu-jah.

Words and Music: Karen Lafferty

Sermon/ Reflection

Intercessions/ Prayers
Minute for mission

Response: Gracious God, hear our prayer.

Grateful for the experience of your sacred presence, we pray for those who are in need of healing, justice, and peace. We name aloud or in the silence of our hearts the intentions within your community, nation, and world.) pause …
May each moment of glory – each embrace of the Sacred– empower us to be faithful. And through our faithfulness, may your realm be established among us. Amen.

The Peace:
The Peace of Christ be always with you!
And also with you!
(We share the peace in physically distant yet socially cohesive ways.)

*Offertory Hymn:
VU 376 Spirit of the Living God

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.
Melt me, mould me, fill me, use me.
Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God, move among us all;
make us one in heart and mind, make us one in love:
humble, caring, selfless, sharing.
Spirit of the living God, fill our lives with love!

Words (v.1) and music Daniel Iverson, Words (v.2) Michael Baughen; Arr. Darryl Nixon.

*Response:
VU 542 We Give You but Your Own

We give you but your own,
what e’er the gift may be;
all that we have is yours alone,
We give it gratefully.

Prayer over the gifts

*The Lord’s Prayer
And now as our Saviour has taught us let us pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

*Hymn:
CP 502 You are Salt for the Earth

You are salt for the earth, O people:
salt for the kingdom of God!
Share the flavour of life, O people:
life in the kingdom of God!

Bring forth the kingdom of mercy,
bring forth the kingdom of peace;
bring forth the kingdom of justice,
bring forth the city of God!

You are a light on the hill, O people:
light for the city of God!
Shine so holy and bright, O people:
shine for the kingdom of God!

Bring forth the kingdom of mercy,
bring forth the kingdom of peace;
bring forth the kingdom of justice,
bring forth the city of God!

You are a seed of the Word, O people:
bring forth the kingdom of God!
Seeds of mercy and seeds of justice
grow in the kingdom of God!

Bring forth the kingdom of mercy,
bring forth the kingdom of peace;
bring forth the kingdom of justice,
bring forth the city of God!

We are a blest and a pilgrim people
bound for the kingdom of God!
Love our journey and love our home-land:
love is the kingdom of God!

Bring forth the kingdom of mercy,
bring forth the kingdom of peace;
bring forth the kingdom of justice,
bring forth the city of God!
