THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship
Come into the wilderness. Step into the unknown possibility that is here in this place with all of our questions.
The sun might be shining but it still feels bleak.
We step into the wilderness because we have questions, and it is here that it feels safe to ask what we long to know.
We come together to a find deeper understanding of God’s love.

*Hymn:
VU 333 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling,
all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation,
enter every trembling heart.

Come, almighty to deliver;
let us all thy grace receive;
suddenly return, and never,
nevermore thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray, and praise thee, without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love.

Finish, then, thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be;
let us see thy great salvation
perfectly restored in thee,
changed from glory into glory,
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.

Opening Prayer

*Hymn:
MV 67 Kyrie Eleison

One: Kyrie eleison, All: Kyrie eleison.
One: Christe eleison. All: Christe eleison.
One: Kyrie eleison. All: Kyrie eleison.

Music: John L. Bell

Prayer of the Day

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as Scripture is read.

Hebrew Scripture: Genesis 12: 1-4a

Psalm 121 VU 844
Refrain: Our help is in the name of our God who made heaven and earth.
I life up my eyes to the hills. From where will I look for help?
My help comes from God, who has made heaven and earth.
God will not let your foot stumble; the One who protects Israel will not slumber.
The One who protects you will neither slumber nor sleep.
R: Our help is in the name of our God who made heaven and earth.

It is God who protects you, your defence at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
God will protect you from all evil, God will protect your life.
God will protect your going and coming, now and forever.
R: Our help is in the name of our God who made heaven and earth.

Music: Michel Guimont.

Epistle Romans 4: 1-5, 13-17

*Hymn:
VU 290 Nada Te Turbe

Nothing can trouble, nothing can frighten.
Those who seek God shall never go wanting.
Nothing can trouble, nothing can frighten.
God alone fills us.

Nada te turbe, nada te͜ es-pante.
Quien a Dios tiene nada le falta.
Nada te turbe, nada te͜ es-pante.
Solo Dios basta.

Words: Spanish St. Teresa of Avila, trans. Taizé Community; Music: Jacques Berthier.

*Gospel: John 3: 1-17
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Prayers of the People
Minute for Mission/ PWRDF
And prayers

The Lord’s Prayer
(Alternate version VU 916)
Our Parent, who is in the heavens, may your name be made holy, may your dominion come, may your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today the bread we need; and forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors; and do not put us to the test, but rescue us from evil. For yours is the dominion, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.
(We share the peace in physically distant yet socially cohesive ways).

*Hymn:
VU 382 Breathe on Me, Breath of God

Breathe on me, breath of God,
fill me with life anew,
that I may love what thou dost love,
and do what thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
until my heart is pure,
until my will is one with thine,
to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
till I am wholly thine,
until this earthly part of me
glows with thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, breath of God:
so shall I never die,
but live with thee the perfect life
of thine eternity.

*Response:
VU 581 When We Are Living v2

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

Prayer over the Gifts

Blessing

*Hymn:
VU 121 Tree of Life
(v. 1-4 and 2nd Sunday of Lent)

Tree of Life and awesome mystery,
in your death we are reborn,
though you die in all of history,
still you rise with every morn,
still you rise with every morn.

Seed that dies to rise in glory,
may we see ourselves in you,
if we learn to live your story
we may die to rise anew,
we may die to rise anew.

We remember truth once spoken,
love passed on through act and word,
every person lost and broken
wears the body of our Lord,
wears the body of our Lord.

Gentle Jesus, mighty Spirit,
come inflame our hearts anew,
we may all your joy inherit
if we bear the cross with you,
if we bear the cross with you.

In our call to be a blessing,
may we be a blessing true;
may we live and die confessing
Christ as Lord of all we do,
Christ as Lord of all we do.

Words and music: Marty Haugen

*Three-fold Amen
