THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship
Come into the wildness of possibility where strangers meet, and everything changes in one conversation. Come away from all that you thought you knew and find your voice.
We have so much to say, so much has gone unsaid.
Come into the wildness and find others that are eager and ready to speak with you and hear your truth.
We come to tell the truth.

Opening Prayer
In the driest desert,
O God, you provided a rock that held a fountain for those who thirst.
Come, gracious God, and fill us with your love.
In a place of quarrelling,
you provide an answer that holds life for those who hope.
Come, gracious God, and fill us with your love.
In a place of wonder, you provided living water, for those who met there.
Come, gracious God, and fill us with your love. Amen.

*Hymn: VU 316 Praise Our Maker

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutlilala’s! Listen deeply as Scripture is read.

Hebrew Scripture: Exodus 17: 1-7

Psalm 95 VU 820 Make a Joyful Noise

Make a joyful noise all the earth!
Worship your God with gladness.
Make a joyful noise all the earth!
Come to this place with a song!

Know that your God has made you.
Know it’s to God we belong.
And come to this place with joyfulness and praise.
Worship your God with a song!

Make a joyful noise all the earth!
Worship your God with gladness.
Make a joyful noise all the earth!
Come to this place with a song!

Enter these gates, thanks giving.
Enter these courts with praise.
Sing thanks to your God and bless his holy Name.
Worship your God with a song!

Make a joyful noise all the earth!
Worship your God with gladness.
Make a joyful noise all the earth!
Come to this place with a song!

Ages through endless ages,
seasons of endless years,
the love of our Maker ever shall endure.
Worship your God with a song!

Make a joyful noise all the earth!
Worship your God with gladness.
Make a joyful noise all the earth!
Come to this place with a song!

Words and music: Linnea Good; arr. David Kai.

Epistle: Romans 5; 1-11

*Hymn: VU 626 I Heard the Voice of Jesus

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto me and rest;
lay down, O weary one, lay down
your head upon my breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
weary and worn and sad;
I found in him a resting place,
and he has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold, I freely give
the living water; thirsty one,
stoop down and drink and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
of that life-giving stream;
my thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
and now I live in him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s light;
look unto me, your morn shall rise,
and all your days be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
in him my star, my sun;
and in that light of life I’ll walk
till travelling days are done.

Words: Horatius Bonar, Music: English/Irish traditional melody, arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams

*Gospel: John 4: 5-42
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Prayer of Confession
O God, our prayers often falter when we think we need to get it all right with every word in its proper place, every sentiment correctly stated.
... In the deep and hospitable silence, enlarge our trust and free our hearts to live the generous ways of your love. Silence is kept.

Words of affirmation

Prayers of the People
Including Minute for Mission

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

*Hymn: VU 457 As We Gather at Your Table

As we gather at your table,
as we listen to your word,
help us know, O God, your presence;
let our hearts and minds be stirred.
Nourish us with sacred story
till we claim it as our own;
teach us through this holy banquet
how to make Love’s victory known.

Turn our worship into witness
in the sacrament of life;
send us forth to love and serve you,
bringing peace where there is strife.
Give us, Christ, your great compassion
to forgive as you forgave;
may we still behold your image
in the world you died to save.

Gracious Spirit, help us summon
other guests to share that feast
where triumphant Love will welcome
those who had been last and least.
There no more will envy blind us
nor will pride our peace destroy,
as we join with saints and angels
to repeat the sounding joy.

Words: Carl P. Daw, Jr. Music: attrib. Benjamin Franklin White; harm. Ronald A. Nelson.

*Response: VU 541
Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise God, all creatures high and low;
give thanks to God in love made known:
Creator, Word and Spirit One! Amen

*Prayer over the Gifts

THE SACRED MEAL IS SHARED

Wanderer, wonderer, seeker of God, come to this wild place.
...There are always others along the way wandering, wondering, and seeking the One wilder than any one of us.

(MV 203 Kingsfold Communion Set)

O holy, holy, holy, God, O God of time and space.
All earth and sea and sky above bear witness to your grace.
Hosanna in the highest heav’n, creation sings your praise.
And blessed is the One who comes and bears your name always!

Here we come around this table so full of love and before these earthy symbols of bread and wine, to offer thanks, O God.
... In you is our refuge, through you is our courage to be. Thanks be to God. Amen!

*The Lord’s Prayer Alternate version (VU 916)
Our Parent, who is in the heavens, may your name be made holy, may your dominion come, may your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today the bread we need; and forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors; and do not put us to the test, but rescue us from evil. For yours is the dominion, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Sharing of the elements
As we share the bread, we recall that God will always love us.
As we share the ‘fruit’, we recall that God will never leave us.

Prayer after Communion
Life-giving God, may we, who share Christ’s body, live his risen life; we, who drink his cup, bring new life to others; we, whom the Spirit lights, give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so that we and all your children shall be free, and all creation will live to praise your name. Amen.

*Hymn: VU 686 God of Grace and God of Glory

God of grace and God of glory,
on your people pour your power;
now fulfil your church’s story;
bring its bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the facing of this hour.
For the facing of this hour.

Lo! the hosts of evil round us,
scorn your Christ, assail your ways.
fears and doubts too long have bound us,
free our hearts to work and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the living of these days.
For the living of these days.

Cure your children’s warring madness,
bend our pride to your control;
shame our wanton selfish gladness,
rich in goods and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.
Lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.

Set our feet on lofty places,
gird our lives that they may be
armoured with all Christ-like graces,
pledged to set all captives free.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
that we fail not them nor thee.
That we fail not them nor thee.

Words: Harry Emerson Fosdick Music Welsh traditional melody; arr. F. R. C. Clarke.

*Blessing

*Commissioning
