THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.

God is full of compassion and mercy:
O come, let us worship.

*Hymn:
MV 1 Let Us Build a House

Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live,
a place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive.
Built of hopes and dreams and visions; rock of faith and vault of grace;
here the love of all shall end divisions:
All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where prophets speak, and words are strong and true,
where all God’s children dare to seek to dream God’s reign anew.
Here the cross shall stand as witness and as symbol of God’s grace;
here as one we claim the faith of Jesus:
All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where hands will reach beyond the wood and stone
to heal and strengthen serve and teach, and live the Word they’ve known.
Here the outcast and the stranger bear the image of God’s face;
let us bring an end to fear and danger:
All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and visions heard
and loved and treasured, taught and claimed as words within the Word.
Built of tears and cries and laughter, prayers of faith and songs of grace;
let this house proclaim from floor to rafter:
All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place.

Words and music: Marty Haugen.

Sharing the Peace:
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as scripture is read the Word proclaimed.
Amen.

Hebrew Scripture: 1 Samuel 16: 1-13

Psalm 23 (KJV)
The LORD is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. Amen.

Epistle: Ephesians 5: 8-14

*Hymn:
SGP 75 My Shepherd is the Living Lord

My shepherd is the living Lord, nothing therefore I need;
in pastures fair, near pleasant streams you settle me to feed.
You bring my wandering spirit back when I forsake your ways,
and lead me for your mercy’s sake in paths of truth and grace.

When I walk thro’ the shades of death, your presence is my stay;
a word of your supporting breath drives all my fears away.
Your hand, in sight of all my foes, does still my table spread;
my cup with blessings overflows, your oil anoints my head.

The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days;
O may your house be mine abode, and all my work be praise.
There would I find a settled rest, while others come and go –
no more a stranger or a guest, but like a child at home.

Words: Thomas Sternhold and Isaac Watts; Music: American folk tune, harmony Erik Routley

God be with you.
And also with you.

Sermon Reflection

Prayers of the People:
Minute for Mission

In peace let us pray to God, saying, “God, have mercy.

*Offertory Hymn:
VU 121 Tree of Life and Awesome Mystery
(verse 1-4 and 4th Sunday in Lent)

Tree of Life and awesome mystery,
in your death we are reborn,
though you die in all of history,
still you rise with every morn,
still you rise with every morn.

Seed that dies to rise in glory,
may we see ourselves in you,
if we learn to live your story
we may die to rise anew,
we may die to rise anew.

We remember truth once spoken,
love passed on through act and word,
every person lost and broken
wears the body of our Lord,
wears the body of our Lord.

Gentle Jesus, mighty Spirit,
come inflame our hearts anew,
we may all your joy inherit
if we bear the cross with you,
if we bear the cross with you.

Give us eyes to see you clearly,
make us children of your light;
give us hearts to live more nearly
as your gospel shining bright,
as your gospel shining bright.

 Words and music: Marty Haugen

*Offering Response:
VU 542 We Give You But Your Own

We give you but your own,
what e’er the gift may be;
all that we have is yours alone,
We give it gratefully.

*Prayer over the Gifts

*The Lord’s Prayer
(Alternate version VU 916)

Our Parent, who is in the heavens, may your name be made holy, may your dominion come, may your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today the bread we need; and forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors; and do not put us to the test, but rescue us from evil. For yours is the dominion, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

*Hymn:
VU 79 Arise, Your Light Is Come

Arise, your light is come!
The Spirit's call obey;
show forth the glory of your God,
which shines on you today.

Arise, your light is come!
Fling wide the prison door;
proclaim the captive’s liberty,
good tidings to the poor.

Arise, your light is come!
All you in sorrow born;
bind up the broken-hearted ones
and comfort those who mourn

Arise, your light is come!
The mountains burst in song!
Rise up like eagles on the wing;
God’s power will make us strong.

Words: Ruth Duck, Music: William H. Walker.

*The Blessing and Dismissal

May the God of mercy transform you by grace, and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be among you and remain with you always.

Glory to God,
whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

May the God of peace enable us to do his will in every kind of goodness, working in us what pleases them, through Jesus the Christ, to whom be the glory for ever and ever. Amen
Thanks be to God. Gilakas’la

*Three-fold Amen
