THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship
Come into the wilderness. Step into the unknown possibility that is here in this place with all of our questions. The sun might be shining but it still feels bleak.
We step into the wilderness because we have questions, and it is here that it feels safe to ask what we long to know. We come together to a find deeper understanding of God’s love.

*Hymn: Common Praise 445 God the Creator

God the Creator, you in love made me
who once was nothing but now have grown.
I bring the best of all my life offers;
for you I share whatever I own.

O Christ the Saviour, you in love called me
who once was no one lost and alone.
I pledge to go wherever you summon,
making your will and purpose my own.

O God the Spirit, you in love move me
who once was nowhere and felt unknown,
I know my need of you for companion:
all things can change when not on my own.

And with the people summoned together.
to be the church in which faith is sown.
I make my promise to live for Jesus
and let the world know all are his own.

Words: John L. Bell

Opening Prayer

*Hymn: MV 67 Kyrie Eleison

One: Kyrie eleison, All: Kyrie eleison.
One: Christe eleison. All: Christe eleison.
One: Kyrie eleison. All: Kyrie eleison.

Music: John L. Bell

Prayer of the Day

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as Scripture is read.
Hebrew Scripture: Ezekiel 37: 1-14

Psalm 130 VU 853
Refrain: Out of the depths I cry to you; my hope is in your promise true.
Out of the depths have I called to you. O God, hear my cry!
Let your ears be attentive to my plea for mercy.
If you should keep account of what is done amiss, O God, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with you, therefore we will honour you.
R: Out of the depths I cry to you; my hope is in your promise true.

I wait for you, God; my soul waits, and in your word is my hope.
My soul waits for God more than the watchers long for morning, more than the watchers long for morning.
O Israel, wait in hope, for with God there is love unfailing.
With God is great power to redeem, to redeem you, Israel, from all your sins.
R: Out of the depths I cry to you; my hope is in your promise true.

Epistle Romans 8: 6-11

*Hymn: VU 200 O Holy Spirit, By Whose Breath

O Holy Spirit, by whose breath
life rises vibrant out of death:
come to create, renew, inspire;
come, kindle in our hearts your fire.

You are the seeker's sure resource,
of burning love the living source,
protector in the midst of strife,
source and sustainer of all life.

In you God's energy is shown,
to us your varied gifts make known.
Teach us to speak; teach us to hear;
yours is the tongue and yours the ear.

Flood our dull senses with your light;
in mutual love our hearts unite.
Your power the whole creation fills;
confirm our weak, uncertain wills.

From inner strife grant us release;
turn nations to the ways of peace.
To fuller life your people bring
that as one body we may sing:
Praise to God, to Christ the Word,
and to the Spirit: all adored. Amen.

*Gospel: John 11: 1-45
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Prayers of the People
Minute for Mission/ PWRDF
In peace let us pray to God, at the phrase: Your kingdom come; respond: your will be done.

*The Lord’s Prayer (Alternate version VU 916)

Our Parent, who is in the heavens, may your name be made holy, may your dominion come, may your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today the bread we need; and forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors; and do not put us to the test, but rescue us from evil. For yours is the dominion, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

*Hymn: VU 238 O Lord My God (How Great Thou Art)

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
consider all the works thy hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander,
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
and hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze;

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!

But when I think that God, his Son not sparing,
sent him to die, I scarce can take it in,
that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
he bled and died to take away our sin.

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then shall I bow in humble adoration,
and there proclaim, “My God, how great thou art!”

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee,
How great thou art! How great thou art!

Words: Carl Gustav Boberg English trans. Stuart K. Hine. Music: Swedish melody; arr. Stuart K. Hine.

*Response: VU 540 Grant Us, God, the Grace

Grant us, God, the grace of giving,
with a spirit large and free,
that ourselves and all our living
we may offer faithfully.

Prayer over the Gifts

Blessing

*Hymn: VU 121 Tree of Life
(v. 1,3,5 and 5th Sunday of Lent)

Tree of Life and awesome mystery,
in your death we are reborn,
though you die in all of history,
still you rise with every morn,
still you rise with every morn.

We remember truth once spoken,
love passed on through act and word,
every person lost and broken
wears the body of our Lord,
wears the body of our Lord.

Christ, you lead and we shall follow,
stumbling though our steps may be,
one with you in joy and sorrow,
we the river, you the sea,
we the river, you the sea.

God of all our fear and sorrow,
God who lives beyond our death;
hold us close through each tomorrow,
love as near as every breath,
love as near as every breath.

Words and music: Marty Haugen

*Three-fold Amen
