THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD
Lord, open our lips,
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Creator, the Redeemer, and the Sustainer: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Alleluia!
The Lord is our refuge and strength:
O come, let us worship.

*Hymn: VU 356 Seek Ye First the Kingdom

Seek ye first the kingdom of God
and God’s righteousness,
and all these things shall be added unto you.
Hal-le-lu, hal-le-lu-jah.

Ask and it shall be given unto you;
seek and you shall find;
knock and the door shall be opened unto you.
Hal-le-lu, hal-le-lu-jah.

We do not live by bread alone,
but by every word
that proceeds from the mouth of God.
Hal-le-lu, hal-le-lu-jah.

Words and Music: Karen Lafferty

Psalm 105:1-11,45c VU 828 (Part One)
Refrain: Bless God, my soul. Hallelujah!
Give thanks and call on God’s name. Make known to the nations what God has done.
Sing, O sing the songs of praise; tell of all God’s wonderful deeds.
Exult in God’s holy name;
let those who seek God be joyful in heart.
R: Bless God, my soul. Hallelujah!

Turn for help to the One who is your strength; seek God’s presence continually.
Remember the marvels the Most High has done, the wonders and judgements God has given,
O children of Abraham and Sarah, God’s servants,
O offspring of Israel, chosen of God.
R: Bless God, my soul. Hallelujah!

You are the eternal God,
your justice reaches every corner of the earth.
You are ever mindful of your covenant, the promise you gave to a thousand generations,
the covenant you made with Sarah and Abraham, the oath you gave to Isaac.
You confirmed if for Jacob as binding. To Israel your everlasting covenant you declared,
“To you I give the land of Canaan, as your appointed inheritance.
R: Bless God, my soul. Hallelujah!

Epistle: Romans 8: 26-39

*Hymn: CP 621 Before the World Began

Before the world began, one Word was there;
grounded in God he was, rooted in care;
by him all things were made, in him was love displayed,
through him God spoke, and said, “I AM FOR YOU.”

Life found in him its source, death found its end;
light found in him its course, darkness its friend.
For neither death nor doubt nor darkness can put out
the glow of God, the shout, “I AM FOR YOU.”

The Word was in the world which from him came;
unrecognized he was, unknown by name;
one with all humankind, with the unloved aligned,
convincing sight and mind, “I AM FOR YOU.”

All who received the Word by God were blessed;
sisters and brothers, they of earth’s fond guest.
So did the Word of grace proclaim in time and space
and with a human face, “I AM FOR YOU.”

Text and music: John L. Bell

Sermon Reflection

Affirmation of Faith: The Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

*Offertory Hymn: VU 226 For the Beauty of the Earth

For the beauty of the earth,
for the glory of the skies,
for the love which from our birth
over and around us lies,
God of all, to you we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

For the beauty of each hour
of the day and of the night,
hill and vale, and tree and flower,
sun and moon, and stars of light,
God of all, to you we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

For the joy of human love,
brother, sister, parent, child,
friends on earth and friends above,
for all gentle thoughts and mild,
God of all, to you we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

For each perfect gift sublime
to our race so freely given;
graces human and divine,
flowers of earth and buds of heaven.
God of all, to you we raise
this our hymn of grateful praise.

*Offering Response: VU 581 When We Are Living v. 2

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

Prayer over the Gifts

Sharing the Peace:
The peace of the Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

*The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.

*Hymn: VU 567 Will You Come and Follow Me

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown,
will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown
in you and you in me?

Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare
should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer
in you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean,
and do such as this unseen,
and admit to what I mean
in you and you in me?

Will you love the 'you' you hide if I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you've found
to reshape the world around,
through my sight and touch and sound
in you and you in me?

Christ, your summons echoes true when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you and never be the same.
In your company I’ll go
where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I’ll move and live and grow
in you and you in me.
