THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship
Kyrie Eleison: MV 67 3x

Kyrie Eleison. Kyrie Eleison.
Christe Eleison. Christe Eleison.
Kyrie Eleison. Kyrie Eleison.

Music: John L. Bell.

Opening Prayer
Here is the journey that moves beyond where we are now. Come trust the God whose journey it is. Come, and trust in the steadfast love of God. This is Lent. This is the journey.
Here is the journey, for all who long to travel. Come, for God makes known love’s path, and invites us to follow, trusting in the steadfast love of God. This is Lent. This is the journey.

Here is the journey, for all those who want to know truth. Come, this is the way of salvation, and we wait for God’s call into steadfast love. This is Lent. This is the journey.
Here is the journey that takes us further than we have been before. Come, for God leads the humble into what is right, surrounded by the steadfast love of God. This is Lent. This is the journey.

*Hymn: VU 121 Tree of Life and Awesome Mystery (v. 1-3, & 1st Sunday)

Tree of Life and awesome mystery,
in your death we are reborn,
though you die in all of history,
still you rise with every morn,
still you rise with every morn.

Seed that dies to rise in glory,
may we see ourselves in you,
if we learn to live your story
we may die to rise anew,
we may die to rise anew.

We remember truth once spoken,
love passed on through act and word,
every person lost and broken
wears the body of our Lord,
wears the body of our Lord.

From the dawning of creation,
you have loved us as your own;
stay with us through all temptation,
make us turn to you alone,
make us turn to you alone.

Words and music: Marty Haugen

Prayer of the Day

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as Scripture is read.
Hebrew Scripture: Genesis 9: 8-17

Psalm 25: 1-9 VU 752

Refrain 2: To you, O God, I lift my soul, to you I lift my soul.
To you, O God, I lift my soul; my God, in you I trust. Let me not be put to shame, nor let my foes gloat over me.
Let none who wait for you be shamed; let them be shamed who wantonly break faith.
Show me your ways; teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me; for you are God my saviour. For you I wait all the day long.
R: To you, O God, I lift my soul, to you I lift my soul.

Remember your mercy, O God, and your steadfast love, for they are as old as time.
Do not remember the sins and offences of my youth. According to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness’ sake, O God!
R: To you, O God, I lift my soul, to you I lift my soul.

You are upright and good, O God, therefore you show the path to those who go astray.
You guide the humble to do what is right, and teach the lowly your way.
All your ways are loving and sure
for those who keep your covenant and commandments.
R: To you, O God, I lift my soul, to you I lift my soul.

Epistle: 1 Peter 3: 18-22

*Hymn: VU 115 Jesus, Tempted in the Desert

Jesus, tempted in the desert,
lonely, hungry, filled with dread:
“Use your power,” the tempter tells him;
“turn these barren rocks to bread!”
“Not alone by bread,” he answers,
“can the human heart be filled.
Only by the Word that calls us
is our deepest hunger stilled!”

Jesus, tempted, at the temple,
high above its ancient wall:
“Throw yourself from lofty turret;
angels wait to break you fall!”
Jesus shuns such empty marvels,
feats that fickle crowds request:
“God, whose grace protects, preserves us,
we must never vainly test.”

Jesus, tempted on the mountain
by the lure of vast domain:
“Fall before me! Be my servant!
Glory, fame, you're sure to gain!”
Jesus sees the dazzling vision,
turns his eyes another way:
“God alone deserves our homage!
God alone will I obey!”

When we face temptation's power,
lonely, struggling, filled with dread,
Christ, who knew the tempter's hour,
come and be our living bread.
By your grace, protect, preserve us
lest we fall, your trust betray.
Yours, above all other voices,
be the Word we hear, obey.

Words: Herman Stuempfle

*Gospel: Mark 1: 9-15
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Hear O Israel
Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first and the great commandment. The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.

Prayers of the People
Minute for Mission/ PWRDF
Prayer bidding and response:
Your kingdom come,
your will be done.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

*Hymn: VU 111 As the Sun with Longer Journey

As the sun of longer journey
melts the winter's snow and ice,
with its slowly growing radiance
warms the seed beneath the earth,
may the sun of Christ's uprising
gently bring our hearts to life.

Through the days of waiting, watching,
in the desert of our sin,
searching on the far horizon
for a sign of cloud or wind,
we await the healing waters
of our Savior's victory.

Praise be given to the maker
of the seasons' yearly round:
Father, Son, and holy spirit –
Source, Sustainer, Lord of life,
as the ever turning ages
roll to their eternal rest.

Words: John Patrick Earls

*Response: VU 542 We Give You but Your Own

We give you but your own,
what e’er the gift may be;
all that we have is yours alone,
We give it gratefully.

Prayer over the Gifts
You need your faith.
We need our faith for the tough times in our lives. We need our faith to give us purpose and direction. We need our faith to strengthen our compassion.
You need your faith,
and we need this community of the faithful.
Loving God, bless these gifts that enable us to grow as faithful followers of Christ. Amen.

Commissioning
As we journey, God says to you and me:
I am with you, I hold you, I call you, I know you, I care for you, I travel with you, I give myself to you, I am on this journey with you, I am God, and my steadfast love is with you always. Let us travel in peace. Thanks be to God. Amen! Gilakas’la! Amen!

*Hymn: VU 117 Jesus Christ is Waiting

Jesus Christ is waiting, waiting in the streets;
no one is his neighbour all alone he eats.
Listen, Lord Jesus, I am lonely too.
Make me, friend or stranger, fit to wait on you.

Jesus Christ is raging, raging in the streets,
where injustice spirals, and real hope retreats,
Listen, Lord Jesus, I am angry too.
In the kingdom’s causes let me rage with you.

Jesus Christ is healing, healing in the streets;
curing those who suffer, touching those he greets.
Listen, Lord Jesus, I have pity too.
Let my care be active, healing just like you.

Jesus Christ is dancing, dancing in the streets,
where each sign of hatred he, with love, defeats.
Listen, Lord Jesus, I should triumph too.
On suspicion’s graveyard let me dance with you.

Jesus Christ is calling, calling in the streets,
“Who will join my journey? I will guide their feet.”
Listen, Lord Jesus, let my fears be few.
Walk one step before me; I will follow you.

Words: John L Bell

*Three-fold Amen
