THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Opening Hymn: VU 333 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling,
all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation,
enter every trembling heart.

Come, almighty to deliver;
let us all thy grace receive;
suddenly return, and never,
nevermore thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray, and praise thee, without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love.

Finish, then, thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be;
let us see thy great salvation
perfectly restored in thee,
changed from glory into glory,
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.

Call to Worship
Boundless love calls you here.
We come joyfully to church.
Love that forgives generously calls you here.
We come thankfully to church.
Love that challenges, directly calls you here.
We come to church ready to respond.
Love known wonderfully in Jesus calls you here.
We come ready to follow faithfully. Amen.

Opening Prayer

Prayer of the Day (VU 110)

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutlilala’s! Listen deeply as Scripture is read.
Numbers 21:4-9

Psalm 107: 1-3, 17-22 VU 831 (1st Paragraph, and Part 2)
Refrain: O give thanks to God for steadfast love.
O give thanks, for God is gracious;
God’s steadfast love endures for ever.
Let the redeemed of God say so, those redeemed from trouble,
whom God gathered in from the lands,
from the east and the west,
from the north and the south.
R: O give thanks to God for steadfast love.

Some suffered because of their sinful ways, afflicted on account of their wrongdoing.
They loath every kind of food, they came close to the gates of death.
Then they cried to you, God, in their trouble; you rescued them from their distress.
You gave the word and healed them; you saved them from the grave.
Let them thank you, God, for your steadfast love, for the wonders you do for us.
Let them offer the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and tell of your deeds with shouts of joy.
R: O give thanks to God for steadfast love.

Epistle Ephesians 2: 1-10

*Hymn: VU 271 There’s A Wideness in God’s Mercy

There's a wideness in God's mercy
like the wideness of the sea;
there's a kindness in God's justice,
which is more than liberty.

There is no place where earth's sorrows
are more felt than up in heaven;
there is no place where earth's failings
have such gracious judgment given.

There is plentiful redemption
in the blood that Christ has shed;
there is joy for all the members
in the sorrows of the Head.

Troubled souls, why will you scatter
like a crowd of frightened sheep?
Foolish hearts, why will you wander
from a love so true and deep?

For the love of God is broader
than the measure of the mind,
and the heart of the Eternal
is most wonderfully kind.

*Gospel: John 3: 14-21
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Hear, O Israel
Sh’mah yee-sorah-ayl ah-don-noi eh-loh-hay-noo ad-don-noi eh-khad.
Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Bah-rookh shem ki-vohd mahl-khoo-toh li-ohlahm vah-ehd.
Blessed be the name of the glory of his kingdom forever and ever.

Vah-hahv-tah ayt ah-don-noi eh-loh-heh-khah bi-khohl li-vahv-khah, oov-khohl nahf-shkhah, oov-khohl moh-deh-khah. Vi-hah-yoo hahd-vah-reem hah-ay-leh, ah-shehr ah-noh-khee mi-tza-oo-khah hah-yohm ahl li-vah-veh-khah.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first and the great commandment.

Oaab-ta lareach co-moch, in m’tizvah g’dola malo.
The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.

Prayers of the People
Minute for Mission/ PWRDF

God of mercy, hold us in love. …
Help us, comfort us, all of our days.
Keep us, hold us, gracious God.

Words and music: Marty Haugen

*Hymn: VU 236 Now Thank We All Our God

Now thank we all our God,
with heart and hands and voices,
who wondrous things has done,
in whom this world rejoices;
who from our mothers’ arms
has blessed us on our way
with countless gifts of love,
and still is ours today.

O may this bounteous God
through all our life be near us,
with ever joyful hearts
and blessèd peace to cheer us,
and keep us in His grace,
and guide us when perplexed,
and free us from all ills,
in this world and the next.

All praise and thanks to God
for all that has been given,
the Son, and Spirit blest
who dwell in highest heaven,
the one eternal God,
whom earth and heaven adore;
for thus it was, is now,
and shall be evermore.

*Response: VU 541 Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise God, all creatures high and low;
give thanks to God in love made known:
Creator, Word and Spirit One! Amen

*Prayer over the Gifts
Loving God, you love the world so much. You love generously. Bless these gifts.
We will use these gifts to praise your name at home and in the sanctuary. We will use these gifts to heal with care and compassion. We will use these gifts to search out where help is needed. We will use these gifts to work globally with the mission fund.
In every faithful use of these gifts, your name, loving God is honoured. Amen.

THE SACRED MEAL IS SHARED
May God be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to God.
Let us give thanks to God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is indeed right, for you made us, ...

...Therefore we gladly join our voices to the song of the Church on earth and heaven:
Holy, Holy, Holy, Holy God of power and might,
Heaven, Heaven, Earth, Earth,
heaven and earth are full of thy glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed, Blessed, Blessed, Blessed,
The One who comes in the name of the Lord.
Blessed, Blessed, Blessed, Blessed,
Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

(Music: Iona Community)

And now, lest we believe that our praise alone fulfils your purpose...

...Take it, all of you, to remember me.’

Jesus, firstborn of Mary,
Have mercy on us.
Jesus, Saviour of the World,
Have mercy on us.
Jesus, Monarch of Heaven,
Grant us peace.

*The Lord’s Prayer
Our Parent, who is in the heavens, may your name be made holy, may your dominion come, may your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today the bread we need; and forgive us our debts, as we have forgiven our debtors; and do not put us to the test, but rescue us from evil. For yours is the dominion, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

(Please remain in your seat, communion will be brought to you.)

Sharing of the elements (hello Jesus)
As we share the bread, we recall that God will always love us.
As we share the ‘fruit’, we recall that God will never leave us.

The Peace
Christ who has nourished us...
...The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.
(Please share the peace in a way you feel comfortable so to do.)

Hymn: VU 121 Tree of Life and Awesome Mystery
(verses 1,2,3 plus 4th Sunday of Lent)

Tree of Life and awesome mystery,
in your death we are reborn,
though you die in all of history,
still you rise with every morn,
still you rise with every morn.

Seed that dies to rise in glory,
may we see ourselves in you,
if we learn to live your story
we may die to rise anew,
we may die to rise anew.

We remember truth once spoken,
love passed on through act and word,
every person lost and broken
wears the body of our Lord,
wears the body of our Lord.

Give us eyes to see you clearly,
make us children of your light;
give us hearts to live more nearly
as your gospel shining bright,
as your gospel shining bright.

Words and music: Marty Haugen

*Blessing

*Commissioning
In gratitude, in deep gratitude for this moment, this meal, these people, we give ourselves to you.
Take us out to live as changed people because we have shared the living Bread and cannot remain the same. Ask much of us, expect much from us, enable much by us, encourage many through us.
So, Lord, may we live to your glory, both as inhabitants of earth; And citizens of the commonwealth of heaven.
Amen.

*Commissioning
Christ’s food in our souls,
our food shared like his.
Christ’s life in our hands,
our lives shaped by his.
Christ’s love in our hearts,
our loved warmed through his.
Christ’s peace on our path,
our path following his.
Amen. Gilakas’la. Amen.

Three-fold Amen

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
So that everyone who believes in him may not perish
but may have eternal life.”
John 3: 16
