Transfiguration Sunday

Mission Statement
As followers of Jesus Christ, our church is a community called to love, honour, worship,
and serve God. We invite others to share our Christian journey as we grow in faith and engage in ministry
in our town and mission in our world.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. (Matthew 17:5)
The Community Gathers
Acknowledgment of Land
Opening Prayer
O Holy One, on mountaintops and valley floors, you reveal to us the light of your love.
Our hearts desire is to bask in the amazing glory of the divine presence.
With each encounter we are changed and transformed.
Draw us nearer that we might receive a double portion of your Holy Spirit.
Help us, O Holy One, to live our lives as a reflection of divine glory.
May we walk among our brothers and sisters as a blessing, bringing light into dark places,
Hope to displace despair, and love that casts out hate.
Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Forgive us, God, when we linger too long by the waters and on the mountain tops,
enthralled by the glory that flows from you.
When we fail to listen to your voice, leading and guiding us, shake us from our contentment
and send us forward endowed with your power.
Amen.
Words of Assurance
Hymn: MV#42, “Praise God for This Holy Ground”
Praise God for this holy ground,
place and people, sight and sound.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
God’s goodness is eternal.
Praise God in whose word we find
food for body, soul and mind.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
God’s goodness is eternal.
Praise God who through Christ makes known
all are loved and called God’s own.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
God’s goodness is eternal.
Praise God’s Spirit who befriends,
raises, humbles, breaks and mends.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
God’s goodness is eternal.
Though praise ends, praise is begun
where God’s will is gladly done.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
God’s goodness is eternal.
Sermon: A Sign Both Clear and Plain
Affirmation of Faith
Let us confess the faith of our baptism as we say:
Hear, O Israel,
The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
Love the Lord your God
with all your heart,
with all your soul,
with all your mind, and with all your strength.
This is the first and the great commandment.
The second is like it:
Love your neighbour as yourself.
There is no commandment greater than these.
Amen.
Offertory Hymn: VU 104, “We Have Come at Christ’s Own Bidding”
We have come at Christ’s own bidding
to this high and holy place,
where we wait with hope and longing
for some token of God’s grace.
Here we pray for new assurance
that our faith is not in vain,
searching like those first disciples
for a sign both clear and plain.
Light breaks in upon our darkness,
splendour bathes the flesh-joined Word,
Moses and Elijah marvel
as the heavenly voice is heard.
Eyes and hearts behold with wonder
how the Law and Prophets meet:
Christ, with garments drenched in brightness,
stands transfigured and complete.
Strengthened by this glimpse of glory,
fearful lest our faith decline,
we like Peter find it tempting
to remain and build a shrine.
But true worship gives us courage
to proclaim what we profess,
that our daily lives may prove us
people of the God we bless.
Words: Carl P Daw, Jr. 1988 Music: Cyril Vincent Taylor 1941.
Offering Invitation:
Offertory Chorus: VU #581, “When We Are Living” verse 2 only
Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
We belong to God, we belong to God.
English translation vv. 2-4 George Lockwood 1987. Music: harmony Carlton R. Young
Prayer over the Gifts:
Intercessions & Thanksgiving:
In our Shared Ministry Church Cycles of Prayer we pray for Bishop Anna and the congregation of St Philip, Oak Bay and the Rev. Christopher Page and the congregations of Robertson Memorial, Nakusp, Robson Valley Shared Ministry, Rosedale United and Rundle Memorial, Banff. …
God of the Way, you are the road we travel, and the sign we follow,
You are bread for the journey, and the wine of arrival.
Guide us as we follow in your way, holding on to each other,
Reaching out to your beloved world.
Tender and mighty God, in your loving purpose
Accept our thanks, answer our prayers and fulfil our hopes.
Amen.
Collect
The Lord’s Prayer (spoken in our mother tongue)
English:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
Hymn: VU 642 “Be Thou My Vison”
Be thou my vision, O joy of my heart;
naught be all else to me save that thou art,
thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping thy presence my light.
Be thou my wisdom, my calm in all strife;
I ever with thee, and thou in my life;
thou loving parent, thy child may I be,
thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.
Riches I heed not, nor vain empty praise,
thou mine inheritance, now and always;
thou and thou only, the first in my heart,
great God of heaven, my treasure thou art.
Great God of heaven, after victory won,
may I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O ruler of all.
