Mission Statement
As followers of Jesus Christ, our church is a community called to love, honour, worship,
and serve God.
We invite others to share our Christian journey as we grow in faith and engage in ministry
in our town and mission in our world.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyone who serves me must follow me, says the Lord, and where I am, there shall my servant be also.
John 12.26
Call to Worship
Come into this virtual space, gathered as a cloud of witnesses.
We come, from our living rooms, from our home offices, from our phones, from our tablets, from our computers.
Come and gather in spirit and in truth.
We come in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, discovering new ways to worship as one, leaning into the Spirit’s guidance as we share the good news.
Across this community and within our family of faith, let us pray as one:
Loving God, we’ve never done it this way before. We feel at sea, unstable—with our footing  insecure. In our uncertainty, we come to commune with you, Risen Christ. We pray for your strength, for your humility, for your insight, for your caring. May you heal what divides us so that our hearts may be united. Amen.
By Gord Dunbar, Gathering LE 2021. P 29
As we journey through Lent we know that God is with us, under our feet, over our heads and our forever home.
Hymn: MV 92 Like a Rock (twice)
Like a rock, like a rock, God is under our feet.
Like the starry night sky God is over our head.
Like the sun on the horizon God is ever before.
Like the river runs to ocean, our home is in God evermore.
Words: Keri Wehlander Music adaptation Linnea Good
Prayer of Confession
Today’s psalm is a cry of confession and turning back to God
Psalm 51:1-12 BAS p 770-771
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness;
in your great compassion blot out my offenses.
Wash me through and through from my wickedness
and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me.
Against you only have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight.
And so you are justified when you speak
and upright in your judgement.
Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth,
a sinner from my mother’s womb.
For behold, you look for truth deep within me,
and will make me understand wisdom secretly.
Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure;
wash me, and I shall be clean indeed.
Make me hear of joy and gladness,
that the body you have broken may rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins
and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence
and take not your holy Spirit from me.
Words of Assurance:
In Psalm 91 the psalmist also offers us assurance despite our shortcomings
Hymn: VU 808 On Eagle’s Wings (v1 ,2, 4)
You who dwell in the shelter of our God,
who abide in this shadow for life,
say to the Lord: "My refuge,
my rock in whom I trust!"
“And I will raise you up on eagle's wings,
bear you on the breath of dawn,
make you to shine like the sun,
and hold you in the palm of my hand.”
The snare of the fowler will never capture you,
and famine will bring you no fear;
under God’s wings your refuge,
God’s faithfulness your shield.
“And I will raise you up on eagle's wings,
bear you on the breath of dawn,
make you to shine like the sun,
and hold you in the palm of my hand.”
For to God’s angels is given a command
to guard you in all of your ways;
upon their hands they will bear you up,
lest you dash your foot against a stone.
“And I will raise you up on eagle's wings,
bear you on the breath of dawn,
make you to shine like the sun,
and hold you in the palm of my hand.”
And hold you, hold you in the palm of my hand.
HutÅ‚ilalas (Listen) To Hear God’s Word
During Lent we have had a theme of covenant. Today’s reading from Jeremiah speaks of a new covenant.
Jeremiah 31:31-34
The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Ron Klusmeier found this hymn to be a favorite with folks across Canada in his last national tour. While it does not name God or Jesus directly; it does speak eloquently of the new covenant written deep in our hearts
Hymn: MV 154 Deep In Our Hearts (v 1, 2, 3)
Deep in our hearts there is a common vision;
Deep in our hearts there is a common song;
Deep in our hearts there is a common story,
telling Creation that we are one.
Deep in our hearts there is a common purpose;
Deep in our hearts there is a common goal;
Deep in our hearts there is a sacred message,
justice and peace in harmony.
Deep in our hearts there is a common longing;
Deep in our hearts there is a common theme;
Deep in our hearts there is a common current,
flowing to freedom like a stream.
Words: John Oldham; music: Ron Klusmeier
The Gospel: John 12: 20-33
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church (Hutłilalas)
Thanks be to God
Reflection:
Listening Along the Pilgrims’ Way by Donald Fishburne
From Living Well Through Lent 2021
The New Creed
We are not alone, we live in God's world.
We believe in God: who has created and is creating,
who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit.
We trust in God.
We are called to be the Church:
to celebrate God's presence,
to live with respect in Creation,
to love and serve others,
to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us.
We are not alone.
Thanks be to God.
Daniel Charles Damon is a prolific hymn writer and arranger (13 hymns in More Voices) In this hymn we are reminded that God is love.
Offertory Hymn: MV 94 Love Knocks and Waits (v 1, 3, 4)
Love knocks and waits for us to hear,
to open and invite;
Love longs to quiet every fear,
and seeks to set things right.
Love comes to heal the broken heart,
to ease the troubled mind;
without a word Love bids us start
to ask and seek and find.
Love knocks and enters at the sound
of welcome from within;
Love sings and dances all around,
and feels new life begin.
Words and music: David Charles Damon.
Prayer over the Gifts
all that we have is yours alone,
we give it gratefully.
Collect
John Fischer wrote this paraphrase of the Lord’s Prayer in the late 1960’s. I learned it from Judy who learned it at Naramata Centre the summer she worked there. We were reminded of it by a nice email from a friend who strummed a few chores only to be flooded by good memories of Judy singing it and years of friendship.
Holy Father
Holy Father, hear our prayer
keep us always in your care
may your kingdom come to us
and may we learn how to trust.
Do your will among us now
as we here before you bow
give to us but what we need
as upon your word we feed.
Keep us from the things that do you wrong
when we’re weak because we think we’re strong
save us from our selfish desire
fill us and with your love inspire
Honor, greatness belong to you
love and peace and mercy too
praise to you again and again
Amen, amen, amen.
Words and music by John Fischer.
In Lent, as at all times, we close our worship recognizing that the end of the service is the beginning of doing god’s will.
Hymn: VU 510 We Have This Ministry
We have this ministry and we are not discouraged;
it is by God’s own power that we may live and serve.
Openly we share God’s word, speaking truth as we believe,
praying that the shadowed world may healing light receive.
We have this ministry, O God receive our living.
O Christ, the tree of life, our end and our beginning,
we grow to fullest flower when rooted in your love.
Brothers, sisters, clergy, lay, called to service by your grace,
different cultures, different gifts, the young and old a place.
We have this ministry, O God, receive our giving.
The yoke of Christ is ours, the whole world is our parish;
we daily take the cross, the burden and the joy.
Bearing hurts of those we serve, wounded, bruised and bowed with pain,
Holy Spirit, bread and wine, we die and rise again.
We have this ministry, O God, receive our loving.
Words and music: Jim Strathdee.
Blessing and Commissioning
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore.
Be strong and of good courage, do not be afraid: for it is the Lord your God who goes with you, God will not fail you or forsake you. Amen.
Threefold Amen
Gilakas’la and go in Peace.
