Mission Statement
As followers of Jesus Christ, our church is a community called to love, honour, worship, and serve God.
We invite others to share our Christian journey as we grow in faith and engage in ministry in our town and mission in our world.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Christ became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name. (Philippians 2:8-9)
Call to Worship
We gather together today, raising our branches in joy!
Joining all who wish to see Jesus, eager for a healing touch, a blessing received.
We gather together today, raising our branches in hope!
Joining all who wish to hear Jesus, longing for a message of welcome and acceptance on our journey.
We gather together today, laying down our branches in fear.
Wondering if we are able to walk with Jesus through the week ahead.
We gather together today, waving branches of prayer.
WALKING TOWARD THE CROSS, AND THE EMPTY TOMB.
Hymn: VU#124, “He Came Riding on a Donkey” (v. 1, 3)
He came riding on a donkey,
he came riding into town;
slow and easy, kind of lowly,
he came riding with the dawn.
His disciples walked beside him,
staying close, a little shy;
not too sure where he would guide them,
on to live or on to die.
But all the morning sang his praises;
waking birds and dancing wind;
here he is, the Son of David,
riding on to take his throne.
In our fasting, and our feasting,
called to follow in his way;
called to walk his road to Easter,
called to live his cross today.
In our fasting, and our feasting,
called to follow in his way;
called to walk his road to Easter,
called to live his cross today.
Let us join to sing his praises;
open hearts and souls to God;
he is with us, Son of David;
God’s Messiah, Christ the Lord.
Words and music Gordon Light 1986; arrangement Nan Thompson 1995.
Opening prayer
Prayer of Confession
O Holy One, we are too distressed to notice that you join us in the parade.
We are too deeply grieved to be aware that you sit beside us at the table.
We are too busy sighing.
We are too busy talking.
We have insisted upon our own answers.
O Holy One, speak to us.
Fill our silences.
Comfort us with your love so that we may find your understanding.
Trust us to find your answers when we finally tire from our own.
Save us, O Holy One, with your steadfast love.
Silence
Words of Assurance
The Proclamation of the Word
Story Time: “Crosses and Clouds”
VU#412: “This is the Day” (based on Psalm 118)
This is the day, this is the day
that our God has made, that our God has made;
we will rejoice, we will rejoice,
and be glad in it, and be glad in it.
This is the day, that our God has made,
we will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day, this is the day that our God has made.
Open to us, open to us
your gates, O God, your gates, O God;
we will go in, we will go in,
to your holy place, to your holy place.
Open to us your gates, O God,
we will go in to your holy place.
Open to us, open to us your gates, O God.
You are our God, you are our God,
we will praise your name, we will praise your name;
we will give thanks, we will give thanks,
for your faithfulness, for your faithfulness.
You are our God, we will praise your name,
we will give thanks for your faithfulness.
You are our God, you are our God, we will praise your name.
The Gospel: Mark 11:1-11
One: The Gospel of Christ
All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
Hymn: VU#123, “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna”
Hosanna, loud hosanna
the happy children sang;
through pillared court and temple
the lovely anthem rang:
to Jesus, who had blessed them,
close folded to his breast,
the children sang their praises,
the simplest and the best.
From Olivet they followed
'mid an exultant crowd,
the victory palm-branch waving,
and singing clear and loud;
the Lord of earth and heaven
rode on in lowly state,
content that little children
should on his bidding wait.
"Hosanna in the highest!“
That ancient song we sing,
for Christ is our Redeemer;
earth, let your anthems ring.
O may we ever praise him
with heart and life and voice,
and in his humble presence
eternally rejoice!
Affirmation of Faith – Let us confess the faith of our baptism as we say:
With the whole church, we affirm that we are made in God’s Image,
Befriended by Christ, empowered by the Spirit.
With people everywhere, we affirm God’s goodness at the heart of humanity,
Planted more deeply than all that is wrong.
With all creation, we celebrate the miracle and wonder of life,
The unfolding purposes of God for ever at work in ourselves and the world.
(From the Iona Abbey Worship Book)
Offering Invitation:
Now is the time for offering up that which matters.
Now is the time for giving of yourself.
Now is the time for the healing of the nations.
Now is the time for good gifts of love.
Offertory Chorus: VU #581, “When We Are Living” verse 2 only
Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
We belong to God, we belong to God.
English translation v. 2 George Lockwood 1987. Music: harmony Carlton R. Young 1989
The Lord’s Prayer (spoken in our mother tongue)
English:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Sayings of Jesus on the Cross
Hymn: VU#182, “Stay With Us Through the Night”
Stay with us through the night.
Stay with us through the pain.
Stay with us, blessed stranger
till the morning breaks again.
Stay with us through the night.
Stay with us through the grief.
Stay with us, blessed stranger
till the morning brings relief.
Stay with us through the night.
Stay with us through the dread.
Stay with us, blessed stranger
till the morning breaks new bread.
Words: Walter Farquharson 1988; Music: Ron Klusmeier 1989.
Blessing and Commissioning
We leave today in limbo, not sure how to feel.
We leave today knowing that the story is not finished.
We leave today knowing we have betrayed and denied and yet…
We leave today knowing that God will never let our stories end in death.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
Threefold Amen
Gilakas’la. Go in Peace.
