HYMN: VU 266 Amazing Grace with two verses in Kwak’wala

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost but now am found,
was blind, but now I see.

Kun ya zi-di egalazes
Sints qa-qa-la e nu kwa
Khi-sa utl gin la mi sin kha
Pa-pas lin duqi lak id.

Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
‘tis grace that brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.

Ka na ka pun id dakila
Kwa ka ga wis Kli sala
Zil waka latl umyaka latl
Kis tla la la enuk.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun,
we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
than when we’d first begun.

English words: John Henry Newton, Kwak̓wala words: Old Kwakiutl translation; Music: from Virginia Harmony

Lord, you now have set your servants free
to go in peace as you have promised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior,
whom you have prepared for all the world to see.
A Light to enlighten the nations,
and the glory of your people Israel.

The Song of Simeon Nunc dimittis: Luke 2:29-32

 “Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.”

Psalm 27: 9-18
Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation with sounds of great gladness;
I will sing and make music to the Lord.
Hearken to my voice, O Lord, when I call;
have mercy on me and answer me.
You speak in my heart and say, “Seek my face.”
Your face, Lord, will I seek.
Hide not your face from me,
nor turn away your servant in displeasure.
You have been my helper; cast me not away;
do not forsake me, O God of my salvation.
Though my mother and my father forsake me,
the Lord will sustain me.
Show me your way, O Lord;
lead me on a level path, because of my enemies.
Deliver me not into the hand of my adversaries,
for false witnesses have risen up against me, and also those who speak malice.
What if I had not believed that I should see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living!
Oh tarry and await the Lord’s pleasure; be strong, and he shall comfort your heart;
wait patiently for the Lord.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Gospel:
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.
Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Gospel: Mark 3:20-35

The Gospel of Christ
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Sermon

HYMN: VU#595 We Are Pilgrims

We are pilgrims on a journey,
fellow travellers on the road;
we are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.

Sister, let me be your servant,
let me be as Christ to you;
pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant too.

I will hold the Christ-light for you
in the night-time of your fear;
I will hold my hand out to you,
speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping,
when you laugh I'll laugh with you;
I will share your joy and sorrow,
till we've seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven,
we shall find such harmony,
born of all we've known together
of Christ's love and agony.

Brother, let me be your servant,
let me be as Christ to you;
pray that I may have the grace to
let you be my servant too.
Words and music: Richard Gillard.

Offering Invitation

Offertory Chorus: VU #540, “Grant Us, God, the Grace”

Prayer over the Gifts

Intercessions & Thanksgiving:
In our Shared Ministry Church Cycles of Prayer we pray for Bishop Anna and the congregation of St. Michael & All Angels, Royal Oak and the Rev. Dawna Wall. We also pray for Webster’s Whonnock United Maple Ridge, Weird Church Plant Cumberland, West Point Grey United Vancouver, West Vancouver United, Westbank United Whitehorse United Whitehorse, Wild Church Plant Kamloops, and Willingdon Heights United Burnaby . . .

God of all, we pray to you for those we love but see no longer. We thank you for the peace and light you bestow upon them; in your loving wisdom and almighty power continue to work in them the good purpose of your perfect will, through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN

We commend the lost children to God, as they continue to journey beyond our sight. O God of all consolation, in your unending love and mercy you turn the darkness of death into the dawn of new life. Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by dying for us, conquered death, and by rising again, restored life. May we not be afraid of death but desire to be with Christ, to be with the those we love, where every tear is wiped away and all things made new. We ask this through Jesus Christ. AMEN.

The Lord’s Prayer (spoken in our mother tongue)

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Let us pray together, each in the language of our hearts.
English: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn: VU#703 In the Bulb There Is a Flower

In the bulb there is a flower;
in the seed, an apple tree;
in cocoons, a hidden promise:
butterflies will soon be free!
In the cold and snow of winter
there's a spring that waits to be,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.

There's a song in every silence,
seeking word and melody;
there's a dawn in every darkness,
bringing hope to you and me.
From the past will come the future;
what it holds, a mystery,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.

In our end is our beginning;
in our time, infinity;
in our doubt there is believing;
in our life, eternity.
In our death, a resurrection;
at the last, a victory,
unrevealed until its season,
something God alone can see.
