Mission Statement
As followers of Jesus Christ, our church is a community called to love, honour, worship, and serve God. We invite others to share our Christian journey as we grow in faith and engage in ministry in our town and mission in our world.
*****

When we cry, “Abba, Father!” it is the Spirit of God bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God. Romans 8:15,16

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship

Jesus, we have followed you to the mountain top,
Hungry for the bread only you can provide.
We started as small groups with families and fellow travellers,
And found ourselves swallowed up in the crowd.
We are here to seek the reassurance of your love in our hearts
And to share that love with each other in this temporary yet eternal community of faith.

Hymn: VU #559 “Come, O Fount of Every Blessing”

Come, O Fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing your grace;
streams of mercy never ceasing
call for songs of endless praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount; I'm fixed upon it,
mount of God's unfailing love.

Here I pause in my sojourning,
giving thanks for having come,
come to trust, at every turning,
God will guide me safely home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God,
came to rescue me from danger,
precious presence, precious blood.

O, to grace how great a debtor
daily I am drawn anew!
Let that grace now, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to you.
Prone to wander, I can feel it,
wander from the love I've known:
here's my heart, O, take and seal it,
seal it for your very own.

Prayer of Approach

Story: “Stone Soup”

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED

O God, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear what you are saying to us today. Hutlilala’s Amen.

Psalm 14 (VU p. 735)

Refrain: Dear God, who loves all human kind, forgive our foolish ways.
The foolish have spoken in their heart, and said “There is no God.”
They are corrupt; they do abominable things; there is no one who does what is good.
God looks down from heaven upon us all, to see if any are wise and seek after God.
But all have gone astray; all alike are corrupted; there is no one who does good; no, not one.
R: Dear God, who loves all human kind, forgive our foolish ways.

Have they no knowledge, all those who do evil?
They devour my people like so much bread, and do not pray to God.
But see, they will tremble with fear, for God is on the side of the righteous.
Do not mock the hope of the poor, for God is their refuge.
O that deliverance for God’s people would come forth from Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of the people, then shall Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad.
R: Dear God, who loves all human kind, forgive our foolish ways.

Sermon: “Potluck for Five Thousand”

Offertory Hymn: VU#598 “When Pain of the World”

When pain of the world surrounds us with darkness and despair,
when searching just confounds us with false hopes everywhere,
when lives are starved for meaning and destiny is bare,
we are called to follow Jesus and let God's healing flow through us.

We see with fear and trembling our aching world in need,
confessing to each other our wastefulness and greed.
May we with steadfast caring the hungry children feed.
We are called to follow Jesus and let God’s justice flow through us.

The church is a holy vessel the living waters fill
to nourish all its people, God’s purpose to fulfill.
May we with humble courage be open to God’s will.
We are called to follow Jesus and let God’s spirit flow through us.

We praise you for our journey and your abundant grace,
your saving word that guided a struggling human race.
O God, with all creation, your future we embrace.
We are called to follow Jesus and let God’s changes flow through us.

Words and music: Jim Strathdee.

VU #581, verse 2 “Through all our living”

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
We belong to God, we belong to God.

English translation v. 2 George Lockwood Music: harmony Carlton R. Young.

Collect

The Lord’s Prayer

English:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn: VU #424 “May the God of Hope Go with Us”

May the God of hope go with us every day,
filling all our lives with love and joy and peace.
May the God of justice speed us on our way,
bringing light and hope to every land and race.
Praying, let us work for peace;
singing, share our joy with all;
working for a world that’s new,
faithful when we hear Christ’s call.

May the God of healing free the earth from fear,
freeing us for peace, both treasured and pursued.
May the God of love keep our commitment clear
to a world restored, to human life renewed.
Praying, let us work for peace;
singing, share our joy with all;
working for a world that’s new,
faithful when we hear Christ’s call.

Words: v. 1 Alvin Schutmaat 1984; v. 2 Fred Kaan 1993; Music: Argentine folk melody
