THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship

Praise for tree, star, and ocean.
God’s creation.
Praise for child, teen, adult, and elder.
God’s creation.
Praise for sun, snow, and rain.
God’s creation.
Praise for creatures finned, winged, and hoofed.
God’s creation.
Praise for cell, molecule, and atom.
Praise for all of God’s creation.

Hymn: MV 30 It’s a Song of Praise to the Maker

It’s a song of praise to the Maker,
the thrush sings high in the tree.
It’s a song of praise to the Maker,
the gray whale sings in the sea,
And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.

It’s a call of life to the Giver,
when waves and waterfalls roar.
It’s a call of life to the Giver,
when high tides break on the shore,
And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.

It’s a hymn of love to the Lover;
the bumblebees hum along.
It’s a hymn of love to the Lover;
the summer breeze joins the song,
And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.

It’s the chorus of all creation;
it’s sung by all living things.
It’s the chorus of all creation;
a song the universe sings,
And by the Spirit you and I
can join our voice to the holy cry
and sing, sing, sing to the Maker too.

Opening Prayer

Collect

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED

God, open us to the power of your Holy Spirit, as the scriptures are read and you Word is proclaimed, may we hear what you are saying. Hutłilala's. Amen.

Hebrew Scripture: Genesis 1:26-31

Psalm 8 Voices United 732

Refrain: O God, our God, how glorious is your name in all the earth!
O God, our God how glorious is your name in all the earth! From the lips of infants and children your praises reach up to the heavens.
You have set up a stronghold against your foes,
to quell the enemy and the avengers.

R: O God, our God, how glorious is your name in all the earth!

When I look to the heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set in their places,
what are we mortals that you should be mindful of us,
mere human beings that you should care for us?

R: O God, our God, how glorious is your name in all the earth!

You have made us little less than divine, and crowned us with glory and honour.
You have made us rulers over all your creation,
and put all things under our feet,
all sheep and cattle, all creatures of the wild,
the birds of the air and the fish of the sea,
and all that make their way through the waters.
R: O God, our God, how glorious is your name in all the earth!

Words: Public Domain. Music: Michel Guimont

The Epistle: Philippians 2:1-8

Hymn: MV 157 I am a Child of God

I am a child of God,
I am a glimpse of God’s new creation.
I am a child of God,
I am a child of God.

I am an endless prayer,
I am a yearning for contemplation,
I am an endless prayer,
I am an endless prayer.

I am an angry voice,
I am compassion and consternation,
I am an angry voice,
I am an angry voice.

I am a cry for peace,
I am commitment and dedication,
I am a cry for peace,
I am a cry for peace.

I am a song of joy,
I am the moment of jubilation,
I am a song of joy,
I am a song of joy.

Words and music: Cheryl and Bruce Harding.

Sermon Reflection

Prayer of Confession

We are joined to every grain of sand:
Earth does not belong to us – we belong to Earth.
We are joined to every shining leaf:
Earth does not belong to us – we belong to Earth.
We are joined to every drop of rain:
Earth does not belong to us – we belong to Earth.
We are joined to every creature’s breath:
Earth does not belong to us – we belong to Earth.
We are joined to every beam of light:
Earth does not belong to us – we belong to Earth.
We are joined to every particle of creation.
Earth does not belong to us – we belong to Earth.
We may know this, and yet –
we confess our arrogance, ignorance,
and greed in how we treat Creation.

(silence for reflection)

Words of affirmation
We are joined forever to God’s remarkable love which brings us to a place of healing and action. Through this love, we can live out these words: Earth does not belong to us – we belong to Earth. Amen.

Prayers of the People
In our Shared Ministry Church Cycles of Prayer We pray for Anna, our bishop, the congregation of St. Philip, Oak Bay and the Rev. Christopher Page. We also pray for the Pacific Mountain Regional Council, the President, Executive Minister, Executive and staff.
Listen!*
Wow! The music of the spheres, without words, sings to our hearts of God’s glory.
Look!*
Incredible! The myriad mysteries of deep space, light years of complexity, blaze with God’s majesty.
Leap!*
Amazing! The intricate weaving of life’s rhythms, the pulse of creation, dances with joy in God’s love.
Come!
We come to celebrate God’s goodness in our lives.
Share!
We share community with all of God’s creation.
Proclaim!
We proclaim the light of Christ as joyful re-creation for all.

Let us pray together:
Our hearts fill with awe, O God, for your Spirit works within us all.
You gift us as Christ’s body to become one, in wholeness, one with all of creation.
Empower us for that purpose this morning, we pray, that we may heed, hope, and heal in Jesus’ name. Amen.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.
(we share the peace through our eyes, hearts and gestures maintaining our physical distancing at this time).

Hymn: MV 138 My Love Colours Outside the Lines

My love colours outside the lines,
exploring paths that few could ever find;
and takes me into places where I’ve never been before,
and opens doors to worlds outside the lines.

My Lord colours outside the lines,
turns wounds to blessings, water into wine;
and takes me into places where I’ve never been before,
and opens doors to worlds outside the lines.

We’ll never walk on water if we’re not prepared to drown,
body and soul need a soaking from time to time.
And we’ll never move the gravestones if we’re not prepared to die,
and realize there are worlds outside the lines.

My soul longs to colour outside the lines,
tear back the curtains, sun, come in and shine;
I want to walk beyond the boundaries where I’ve never been before,
throw open doors to worlds outside the lines.

We’ll never walk on water if we’re not prepared to drown,
body and soul need a soaking from time to time.
And we’ll never move the gravestones if we’re not prepared to die,
and realize there are worlds outside the lines.

My soul longs to colour outside the lines,
tear back the curtains, sun, come in and shine;
I want to walk beyond the boundaries where I’ve never been before,
throw open doors to worlds outside the lines.

Prayer over the Gifts

THE SACRED MEAL IS SHARED

Invitation

Words of remembering

Prayer of consecration
In the name of the Party-Maker, soup-kitchen with five loaves and two fish, and Daily Bread, Amen.

God, bless the spoons, chopsticks, flatbread, and fingers of all your children. Bless every meeting of hunger and generosity. Bless our memories of food shared and our hopes for food justice.

Bless with your Holy Spirit the peace of our common cup, the pieces of our broken bread and the global holy chaos of Communion in all the world’s time zones, that, everywhere, and in this place sacred to us today, it may become a sacred meal and our pledge of an open table, in Christ’s name now, and praying the prayer that binds us together...(the Lord’s Prayer)
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Sharing of the elements
The bread is blessed and broken like the banquet of grace. Let us eat the bread. The cup is blessed and poured like overflowing tears and joy. Sharing love, we will never be hungry. Drinking deeply, we will never thirst.

(Please remain in at your seat, communion will be brought to you.)

Eat this bread and remember: God will always love you and God will never leave you! Amen.

Prayer After Communion
One: When every prayer is spoken throughout the world...
The real work of Communion begins:
To find those lost and broken by the pandemic, to feed all the hungry in body and spirit, to reunite children with parents, to rebuild places where fire has burned, storms have devastated, and war has been waged, to ask forgiveness of the world’s indigenous peoples...
And, in every season, to make music in our hearts. Amen.

Hymn: VU 678 For the Healing of the Nations

For the healing of the nations, God we pray with one accord;
For a just and equal sharing of the things that earth affords.
To a life of love in action, help us rise and pledge our word.

Lead us forward into freedom, from despair your world release;
That, redeemed from war and hatred, all may come and go in peace.
Show us how through care and goodness, fear will die and hope increase.

All that kills abundant living, let it from the earth be banned:
Pride of status, race or schooling, dogmas that obscure your plan.
In our common quest for justice, may we hallow life`s brief span.

You, Creator God, have written your great name on humankind;
for our growing in your likeness bring the life of Christ to mind;
that, by our response and service, earth its destiny may find.

Words: Fred Kaan, Music: Henry Purcell

Blessing:
May the God who dances in creation,
who embraces us with human love,
who shakes our lives like thunder,
bless us and drive us out with power,
to fill the world with her justice. AMEN

Sending Forth
Go into the world: dance, laugh, sing, and create.
We go with the assurance of your blessing, O God.
Go into the world: risk, explore, discover, and love.
We go with the assurance of your grace, O God.
Go into the world: believe, hope, struggle, and remember.
We go with the assurance of your love, O God.

Thanks be to God. AMEN. Gilakas’la

Three-fold Amen
