Call to Worship (Based on Psalm 146)

Praise God who made heaven and earth.
Happy are those whose help is in God.
Praise God who cares for the oppressed and provides enough for all.
Happy are those whose help is in God.
Praise God who watches over those who feel included and those who feel left out.
Happy are those whose help is in God.
Let us worship God.

Opening Prayer
Loving God, Mother and Father of all people,
we open our hearts to you and the life you give. Help us to breathe in deeply of your wild and wonderful spirit and inspire us with your presence so that we might be at peace with all of who we are, and more fully become the people you have called us to be. Amen.

Hymn: VU # 375 Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness, calling and free,
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

You moved on the waters, you called to the deep,
then you coaxed up the mountains from the valleys of sleep;
and over the eons you called to each thing:
wake from your slumbers and rise on your wings.

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness, calling and free,
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

You swept thro’ the desert, you stung with the sand,
and you goaded your people with a law and a land;
and when they were blinded with their idols and lies,
then you spoke thro’ your prophets to open their eyes.

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness, calling and free,
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

You sang in a stable, you cried from a hill,
Then you whispered in silence when the whole world was still,
and down in the city you called once again,
when you blew thro’ your people on the rush of the wind.

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness, calling and free,
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

You call from tomorrow, you break ancient schemes,
from the bondage of sorrow the captives dream dreams,
our women see visions, our men clear their eyes,
with bold new decisions your people arise.

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness, calling and free,
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

Hebrew Scriptures: Ruth 1: 1-18

Psalm 146 VU #868

R: Give your praise to God, O my soul!
Praise God, O my soul. As long as I live I will praise God.
Yes, as long as I have life I will sing praises to God.
Put not your trust in princes, nor in any mortal, for in them there is no help.
When they breathe their last they return to dust; then their plans come to nothing.
Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob,
Whose hope is in the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them,
The One who keeps faith forever,
Who gives justice to the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry.
R: Give your praise to God, O my soul!

God sets prisoners free, restores sight to the blind.
God straightens those who are bent, loves those who are just.
God cares for the stranger in the land, and sustains the widow and orphan.
But the way of the wicked God turns to ruin.
God shall reign forever, O Zion.
Your God for all generations.
R: Give your praise to God, O my soul!

Hebrews 9: 24-28

Hymn: SGP #43 Love, love, love your God. (sung in a ‘round’)

love your neighbour as yourself, for
God is love.

Sermon/ Reflection

Offertory Hymn: VU # 210 You Lord Are Both Lamb and Shepherd

You, Lord, are both lamb and shepherd.
You, Lord, are both prince and slave.
You, peacemaker and sword bringer
of the way you took and gave.
You the everlasting instant,
you, whom we both scorn and crave.

Clothed in light upon the mountain,
stripped of might upon the cross,
shining in eternal glory,
beggared by a soldier’s toss.
You, the everlasting instant,
you who are both gift and cost.

You, who walk each day beside us,
sit in power at God’s side.
You, who preach a way that’s narrow,
have a love that reaches wide.
You the everlasting instant;
you, who are our pilgrim guide.

Worthy is our earthly Jesus!
Worthy is our cosmic Christ!
Worthy your defeat and victory.
Worthy still your peace and strife
You the everlasting instant;
you, who are our death and life.

Our Father in Heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive
those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours
now and forever.
Amen.

Hymn: VU 481 Sent Forth by God’s Blessing

Sent forth by God’s blessing, our true faith confessing,
the people of God from His dwelling take leave.
The supper is ended, O now be extended
the fruits of this service to all who believe.

The seed of Christ's teaching, receptive souls reaching,
shall blossom in action for God and for all.
God's grace did invite us, God's love shall unite us
to work for the kingdom and answer its call.

With praise and thanksgiving to God ever-living,
the tasks of our everyday life we will face.
Our faith ever sharing, in love ever caring,
embracing God's children of each tribe and race.

With your feast you feed us, with your light now lead us;
unite us as one in this life that we share.
Then may all the living with praise and thanksgiving
Give honour to Christ and the name that we bear.
