THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship

Welcome to this ancient place:
House of prayer for many nations; home to all who come.
Welcome to this gathering place:
Friend and stranger, saint and sinner in all who gather here.
Come with hope or hesitation; come with joy or yearning;
All who hunger, all who thirst for life in all its fullness.
Generous God and generous saviour, touch us through your Spirit.

Hymn: VU 221 Sing Praise to God, Who Has Shaped

Sing praise to God, who has shaped and sustains all creation!
Sing praise, my soul, in profound and complete adoration!
Gladsome rejoice -
organ and trumpet and voice -
joining God's great congregation.

Praise God, our guardian, who lovingly offers correction,
who, as on eagle's wings, saves us from sinful dejection.
Have you observed,
how we are always preserved
by God's parental affection?

Sing praise to God, with sincere thanks for all your successes.
Merciful God ever loves to encourage and bless us.
Only conceive
what godly strength can achieve:
strength that would touch and caress us.

Sing praise, my soul, the great name of your high God commending.
All that have life and breath join you, their notes sweetly blending.
God is your light!
Soul, ever keep this in sight:
amen, amen never ending.

Words: Joachim Neander 1860, trans. Madeleine Forell Marshall; Music: Stralsund Gesangbuch

Opening Prayer

We gather in God’s name.
We claim Christ’s promised presence.
My brothers and sisters, not out of dread and fear, but believing that God is faithful to forgive, let us rid ourselves of what we need to carry no longer.
Amen.

Collect

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED

Hutlilala’s! Listen as God’s Word is proclaimed!

1 Samuel 1: 4-20

Hannah’s Song: 1 Samuel 2:1-10 (Responsively)

Hannah prayed and said, ‘My heart exults in the LORD; my strength is exalted in my God.
My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in my victory.

‘There is no Holy One like the LORD, no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.
Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength.
Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry are fat with spoil.

The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn.
The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up.

The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, he also exalts.
He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honour.

For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s, and on them he has set the world.
‘He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness; for not by might does one prevail.

The LORD! His adversaries shall be shattered; the Most High will thunder in heaven.
The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king, and exalt the power of his anointed.’

Hymn: MV 120 My Soul Cries Out

My soul cries out with a joyful shout
that the God of my heart is great,
And my spirit sings of the wondrous things
that you bring to the ones who wait.
You fixed your sight on your servant's plight,
and my weakness you did not spurn,
so from east to west shall my name be blest.
Could the world be about to turn?

My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn!

Though I am small, my God, my all,
you work great things in me,
and your mercy will last from the depths of the past
to the end of the age to be.
Your very name puts the proud to shame,
and to those who would for you yearn,
you will show your might, put the strong to flight,
for the world is about to turn.

My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn!

From the halls of power to the fortress tower,
not a stone will be left on stone.
Let the king beware for your justice tears
ev'ry tyrant from his throne.
The hungry poor shall weep no more,
for the food they can never earn;
there are tables spread, ev'ry mouth be fed,
for the world is about to turn.

My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn!

Though the nations rage from age to age,
we remember who holds us fast:
God's mercy must deliver us
from the conqueror's crushing grasp.
This saving word that our forebears heard
is the promise which holds us bound,
‘til the spear and rod can be crushed by God,
who is turning the world around.

My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn!

Sermon Reflection

Prayer of Confession and Restoration

Eternal God, maker of the skies above, lowly Christ, born amidst the growing earth, Spirit of life, wind over the flowing waters, in earth, sea, and sky, you are there.

O hidden mystery, sun behind all suns, soul behind all souls, in everything we touch, in everyone we meet, your presence is around us, and we give you thanks.

But when we have not touched but trampled you in creation, when we have not met but missed you in one another, when we have not received but rejected you in the poor, forgive us, and hear now our plea for mercy.
Hear now the words of Jesus for all who are truly sorry and seek to renew their lives:
Your sins are forgiven. Go in peace; come and follow me.
(pause)

Lead us now, O God, to acknowledge your costly generosity by living as forgiven people, until heaven and earth rejoice and the whole earth cries Glory! through Christ our Saviour.
Amen.

Prayers of the People

In our Shared Ministry Church Cycles of prayer, we pray for Anna our bishop, for Linda our Primate and for Mark our National Indigenous Archbishop and The Parish of St. Michael and All Angels, Chemainus and the Rev. Michael Wimmer that they be given the courage in their leadership and their lives. We also pray for Inlet United, Jaffrey United, James Bay United, Jubilee United, and Kamloops United.

We also pray....

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.
(we share the peace in physically distant yet socially cohesive ways).

Hymn: CP 59 Jesus Calls Us Here to Meet Him

Jesus calls us here to meet him,
as through word and song and prayer,
we affirm God’s promised presence
where his people live and care.
Praise the God who keeps his promise;
praise the Son who calls us friends;
praise the Spirit who, among us,
to our hopes and fears attends.

Jesus calls us to confess him
Word of life and Lord of all,
sharer of our flesh and frailness,
saving all who fail or fall.
Tell his holy human story;
tell his tales that all may hear;
tell the world that Christ in glory
came to earth to meet us here.

Jesus calls us to each other,
vastly different though we are;
creed and colour, class, and gender
neither limit nor debar.
Join the hand of friend and stranger;
join the hands of age and youth;
join the faithful and the doubter
in their common search for truth.

Jesus calls us to his table
rooted firm in time and space,
Where the church in heart and heaven
finds a common meeting place.
Share the bread and wine his body;
share the love of which we sing;
Share the feast for saints and sinners
hosted by our God and king.

Words: John L. Bell and Graham Maule; Music: Melody Gaelic trad., adapt. and arr. The Iona Community (Scotland).

Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen

Words: Thomas Ken; Music: Genevan Psalter

Prayer over the Gifts

THE SACRED MEAL IS SHARED
The table of bread and wine is now to be made ready....

Words of Remembering
Blessed is our brother Jesus, ...

...I shall drink with you next in the coming kin-dom.

May God be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts,
we lift them up to God.
Let us give thanks to God,
it is right to give both thanks and praise.

Call and Response

Prayer of Consecration
Hear us, O Christ, and breathe your Spirit upon us and upon this bread and wine ...

And now as our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Please remain in at your seat, communion will be brought to you.)

Sharing of the Elements
As we share the bread, we recall that God will always love us.
As we share the ‘wine’, we recall that God will never leave us.

Prayer after Communion
Gracious God, at this holy table,
we share in the life of Christ.
May we who have been nourished by holy things
bear witness to his light, and share in his ministry;
this day, every day, in every way. Amen.
