Call to Worship
Friends, grace to you and peace from the One who is and who was and who is to come.
And also to you!

One: We gather in the love of Christ to be centered and stilled.
We open our hearts to receive anew.
We open our hearts to the mercy of Christ, who is our healing and wholeness.
We open our minds to receive anew.
We open our ears to the wisdom of Christ, who is our grounding and inspiration.
We open our lives to receive anew. Amen.

Opening Prayer
Eternal God,
your word of grace continues to sustain us,
even when we think we have stopped listening.
Today, may we be moved by One who invites us to follow
o
n the paths of love and justice;
paths of tender care for earth and all its creatures.
This is our heart’s desire. Amen

Hymn: VU 333 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling

Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart.

Come, almighty to deliver; let us all thy grace receive;
suddenly return, and never, nevermore thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love.

Finish, then, thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be;
let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee,
changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise.

Words: Charles Wesley; Music: Rowland Huw Prichard

Collect
Alpha and Omega, you encircle time with your presence, you encircle creation with your love. You brought all things into being and receive all things back to you.
May we find our hope, and our life, in your enfolding grace. Amen

Revelation 1:4b-8

Psalm 132: 1-18 VU 854-855

Refrain: Arise, O God, make this the place wherein your name shall dwell.
O God, remember David and all the hardships he endured,
how he swore an oath to you, A promise to the Mighty One of Jacob.
I will not enter my house, nor will I climb into bed, I will not give sleep to my eyes, not even let my eyelids droop
until I find a place for God, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.
R: Arise, O God, make this the place wherein your name shall dwell.

At Ephrathah we heard God’s ark was there; we found it in the region of Jaar.
Let us approach the place where the Most High rests, let us kneel in worship at God’s footstool.
Arise, O God, and enter your resting place, you and your mighty ark.
Let your priests be clothed with righteousness, let your faithful people shout for joy.
R: Arise, O God, make this the place wherein your name shall dwell.

For your servant David’s sake, do not reject your Anointed.
You made a sure promise to David, a promise that will never be revoked:
One of your own children I will set upon your throne.
And if they in turn keep my covenant, the teaching that I give them, their descendants too shall sit on your throne in succession forever.
R: Arise, O God, make this the place wherein your name shall dwell.

God has chosen Zion, God desired it for a home:
“Here I will rest for ever; here I will dwell, for it is my delight.
R: Arise, O God, make this the place wherein your name shall dwell.

I will bless the city with abundant food, and satisfy its poor with bread.
I will clothe its priests with salvation; its faithful people will rejoice and sing.
There I will make a branch sprout for David; I will prepare a lamp for my Anointed.
His enemies I will clothe with shame, but on his head the crown will sparkle.”
R: Arise, O God, make this the place wherein your name shall dwell.

Refrain: Scottish Psalter 1651

Hymn: VU 581 When We Are Living

When we are living, it is in Christ Jesus,
and when we're dying, it is in the Lord.
Both in our living and in our dying,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

'Mid times of sorrow and in times of pain,
when sensing beauty or in love's embrace,
whether we suffer, or sing rejoicing,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

Across this wide world, we shall always find
those who are crying with no peace of mind,
but when we help them, or when we feed them,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

English translation: v.1 translation Elsie S. Eslinger v. 2-4 George Lockwood Music: harmony Carlton R. Young.

The Gospel: John 18: 33-37

Sermon/ Reflection

Prayer of confession
Loving God,
forgive us when we misunderstand, when we try to do things our way, when we do not listen to your word and will for us. Forgive us when we try to live our lives without giving a thought or a care to what you want us to do. In this time of silence, hear our confession, and help us to envision your dream for our world.
(silence)

Words of affirmation
We are forgiven;
help us to forgive others.
We are loved;
help us to love others.
We are blessed;
help us to bless others. Amen

Offertory Hymn: VU 401 Worship the Lord, Worship the Father

Worship the Lord (worship the Lord)
worship the Father, the Spirit, the Son,
raising our hands (raising our hands)
in devotion to God who is one!

Raising our hands as a sign of rejoicing,
and with our lips our togetherness voicing,
giving ourselves to a life of creativeness,
worship and work must be one!

Worship the Lord (worship the Lord)
worship the Father, the Spirit, the Son,
raising our hands (raising our hands)
in devotion to God who is one!

Praying and training that we be a blessing,
and by our workmanship daily confessing:
we are committed to serving humanity,
worship and work must be one!

Worship the Lord (worship the Lord)
worship the Father, the Spirit, the Son,
raising our hands (raising our hands)
in devotion to God who is one!

Called to be partners with God in creation,
honouring Christ as the Lord of the nation,
we must be ready for risk and for sacrifice,
worship and work must be one!

Worship the Lord (worship the Lord)
worship the Father, the Spirit, the Son,
raising our hands (raising our hands)
in devotion to God who is one!

Bringing the bread and the wine to the table,
asking that we may be led and enabled,
truly united to build new communities,
worship and work must be one!

Worship the Lord (worship the Lord)
worship the Father, the Spirit, the Son,
raising our hands (raising our hands)
in devotion to God who is one!

Now in response to the life you are giving,
help us, O Father, to offer our living,
seeking a just and a healing society,
worship and work must be one!

Worship the Lord (worship the Lord)
worship the Father, the Spirit, the Son,
raising our hands (raising our hands)
in devotion to God who is one!

The Lord’s Prayer (Sung SGP #12)

Our Father in Heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive
those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom,
the power and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.

Setting: Darryl Nixon

Hymn: VU 686 (tune VU 651)
God of Grace and God of Glory

God of grace and God of glory,
on your people pour your power;
now fulfil your church’s story;
bring its bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the facing of this hour.
For the facing of this hour.

Lo! the hosts of evil round us,
scorn your Christ, assail your ways.
fears and doubts too long have bound us,
free our hearts to work and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
for the living of these days.
For the living of these days.

Cure your children’s warring madness,
bend our pride to your control;
shame our wanton selfish gladness,
rich in goods and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.
Lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.

Set our feet on lofty places,
gird our lives that they may be
armoured with all Christ-like graces,
pledged to set all captives free.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
that we fail not them nor thee.
That we fail not them nor thee.

Words: Harry Emerson Fosdick, Music: John Hughes

Blessing
Grace to you and peace from the One who is and who was and who is to come.
And also to you!
Friends of God, go into the new week in the wise and courteous spirit of Christ. ...

Thanks be to God. Gilakas’la
