THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.

The kingdom of God is at hand.
O come let us worship.

Advent Candle: HOPE

One: For the robe of righteousness, we are certain does not fit,
we light this candle.
Two: For the messengers and prophets encouraging us to prepare,
we light this candle.
Three: For our tired feet exhausted by pacing up and down, back and forth,
we light this candle.
Four: For the landscape that has already changed,
we light this candle.
Five: For the refining and purifying of what could be,
we light this candle.

(1st candle is lit)

Hymn: VU 6 A Candle Is Burning

A candle is burning, a flame warm and bright,
a candle of hope in December’s dark night.
While angels sing blessings from heaven’s starry sky
our hearts we prepare now, for Jesus is nigh.

Words: Sandra Dean and music: James R. Murray

Sharing the Peace:
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.
(We share the peace in physically distant but socially cohesive way.)

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED

Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as scripture is read and the Word proclaimed.
Amen.

Hebrew Scripture Jeremiah 33: 14-16

Psalm 25 VU 752

Refrain: To you, O God, I lift my soul, to you I lift my soul.
To you, O God, I lift my soul; my God, in you I trust. Let me not be put to shame, nor let my foes gloat over me.
Let none who wait for you be shamed; let them be shamed who wantonly break faith.
Show me your ways; teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me; for you are God my saviour. For you I wait all the day long.
R: To you, O God, I lift my soul, to you I lift my soul.

Remember your mercy, O God, and your steadfast love, for they are as old as time.
Do not remember the sins and offences of my youth. According to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness’ sake, O God!
R: To you, O God, I lift my soul, to you I lift my soul.

You are upright and good, O God, therefore you show the path to those who go astray.
You guide the humble to do what is right, and teach the lowly your way.
All your ways are loving and sure
for those who keep your covenant and commandments.
R: To you, O God, I lift my soul, to you I lift my soul.

Epistle: 1 Thessalonians 3: 9-13

HYMN: VU 1 O Come, O Come Emmanuel v. 1, 2, 3, 7

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
and ransom captive Israel
that mourns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O Wisdom from on high,
who orders all things mightily;
to us the path of knowledge show,
and teach us in her ways to go.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, great God of might,
who to your tribes on Sinai’s height
in ancient times once gave the law
in cloud, and majesty, and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Desire of nations, bind
all peoples in one heart and mind,
O Bid our sad divisions cease,
and be for us our Prince of Peace.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

Sermon Reflection

Offertory Hymn: VU 2 Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

Come, thou long-expected Jesus
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.

Israel's strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art,
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.

Born thy people to deliver,
born a child and yet a king,
born to reign in us forever,
now thy gracious kingdom bring.

By thine own eternal Spirit
rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all-sufficient merit
raise us to thy glorious throne.

Words: Charles Wesley; Music: Psalmodia Sacra

Offering Response VU 581 v2 When we are Living

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

English translation v. 2 George Lockwood Music: harmony Carlton R. Young.
