Call to Worship

We gather, longing for gentleness among all:
peace is the home we seek.
We gather, longing for healing where there has been harm:
peace is the home we seek.
We gather, longing for generosity to inform all actions:
peace is the home we seek.
We gather, longing for peace in all parts of life:
God is the home we seek.
Come, let us worship God in a spirit of peace.

Advent Wreath (Advent 1 candle is already lit: HOPE)

Voice 1: For the robe of righteousness we are certain does not fit,
All: we light this candle.
Voice 2: For the messengers and prophets encouraging us to prepare,
All: we light this candle.
Voice 3: For our tired feet exhausted by pacing up and down, back and forth,
All: we light this candle.
Voice 4: For the landscape that has already changed,
All: we light this candle.
Voice 5: For the refining and purifying of what could be,
All: we light this candle.
Voice 6: For the acceptance we now feel that things are not as they should be,
All: we light this candle.
(The 2nd candle PEACE is lit.)

Hymn: VU 6 A Candle is Burning verses 1 & 2

A candle is burning, a flame warm and bright,
a candle of hope in December’s dark night.
While angels sing blessings from heaven’s starry sky
our hearts we prepare now, for Jesus is nigh.

A candle is burning, a candle of peace,
a candle to signal that conflict must cease:
for Jesus is coming to show us the way;
a message of peace humbly laid in the hay.

Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as scripture is read the Word proclaimed.
Amen.

Hebrew Scriptures: Malachi 3: 1-4

Canticle of Zechariah (Luke 1: 68-79) VU 900

Refrain: God shall fulfil the promise and bring the people peace.
Blessed be the God of Israel,
who has come to the people and set them free,
who has raised up for us a mighty saviour,
born of the house of the servant David.
Through the holy prophets of old God promised to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of all who hate us,
to show the mercy promised to our ancestors,
to remember the holy covenant, the oath God swore to our ancestors Abraham and Sarah,
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to serve God without fear, holy and righteous in God’s presence, all the days of our life.
R: God shall fulfil the promise and bring the people peace.

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare the way,
to give the people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God, the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who sit in darkness, in the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
R: God shall fulfil the promise and bring the people peace.

Epistle: Philippians 1: 3-11

Hymn: VU 883 Comfort, Comfort, Ye My People

Comfort, comfort now my people;
speak of peace; so says our God.
Comfort those who sit in darkness,
mourning under sorrow's load.
Cry out to Jerusalem
of the peace that waits for them;
tell them that their sins I cover
and their warfare now is over.

For the herald's voice is crying
in the desert far and near,
calling all to true repentance,
since God's judgement now is here.
Oh, that warning cry obey!
Now prepare for God a way!
Let the valleys rise in meeting
and the hills bow down in greeting.

Then make straight what long was crooked;
make the rougher places plain.
Let your hearts be true and humble,
as befits a holy reign.
For the glory of our God
now on earth is shed abroad,
and all flesh shall see the token
that God's word is never broken.

Words: Johannes G. Olearius; translation Catherine Winkworth, alt. Music: Louis Bourgeois; Harmony: Claude Goudimel

The Gospel: Luke 3: 1-6

Sermon/Reflection

Prayer of confession

When greed overtakes compassion; when fear overtakes reason,
may we turn our hearts to you, O God.
When despair overtakes hope; when hatred overtakes understanding,
may we turn our hearts to you, O God.
When apathy overtakes concern; when deception overtakes truth,
may we turn our hearts to you, O God.
(silence for reflection)

Words of affirmation

God’s grace is in that still, small voice that calls to our hearts at all times and in all places.
We will open our hearts and listen for this voice of love so that we might discover when it is time to turn. Amen.

Offertory Hymn: VU 684 Make Me a Channel of Your Peace

Make me a channel of your peace:
where there is hatred let me bring your love;
where there is injury your healing power,
And where there's doubt true faith in you.

O Spirit grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace:
where there's despair in life let me bring hope;
where there is darkness, only light;
and where there's sadness, ever joy.

O Spirit grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving to all that we receive,
and in dying that we're born to eternal life.

Words: attr. to St. Francis; Music: Sebastian Temple; arrangement Betty Pulkingham.

VU # 1 O Come, O come Emmanuel verses 1,4 and 7

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
and ransom captive Israel
that mourns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O Rod of Jesse’s stem,
from every foe deliver them
that trust your mighty power to save,
and give them victory o’er the grave.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Desire of nations, bind
all peoples in one heart and mind,
O Bid our sad divisions cease,
and be for us our Prince of Peace.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

The Lord’s Prayer

English:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn: VU 18 There’s a Voice in the Wilderness

There’s a voice in the wilderness crying,
a call from the ways untrod:
prepare in the desert a highway,
a highway for our God!
The valleys shall be exalted,
the lofty hills brought low;
make straight all the crooked places,
where the God, our God, may go!

O Zion, that bringest good tidings,
get thee up to the heights and sing!
Proclaim to a desolate people
the coming of their King.
Like the flowers of the field they perish,
like grass our works decay,
the power and pomp of nations
shall pass like a dream away.

But the word of our God endureth,
the arm of the Lord is strong;
God stands in the midst of nations,
and soon will right the wrong.
God shall feed the flock like a shepherd,
the lambs so gently hold;
to pastures of peace will lead them,
and bring them safe to fold.

There’s a voice in the wilderness crying,
a call from the ways untrod:
prepare in the desert a highway,
a highway for our God!
The valleys shall be exalted,
the lofty hills brought low;
make straight all the crooked places,
where the God, our, God may go!

Words: James Lewis Milligan alt. Music: Henry Hugh Bancroft.

Blessing:

Through sun and shadow,
guide our hearts in the way of love.
Through rush and repose,
guide our minds in the way of wisdom.
Through deluge and dust,
guide our spirits in the way of joy.
Through calm and chaos,
guide our feet in the way of peace. Amen.

Thanks be to God. Gilakas’la

Threefold Amen
