Call to Worship
God is making great changes to our world. Are you ready to take part?
We have come to do God’s will: to work for justice, to bring balance back to our living.

God is making great changes to our world. Are you ready to take part?
We have come to do God’s will: to seek and celebrate God’s surprising love, to establish God’s Realm here on earth.
Come, let us worship God, who comes into our world to reconcile and make things new.

Opening Prayer

Advent candles LOVE
(Advent 1, 2, and 3 are lit)

Voice 1: For the child leaping in Mary’s womb,
we light this candle.
Voice 2: For the labour required by you and by me to bring peace,
we light this candle.
Voice 3: For generation upon generation that need this blessing again,
we light this candle.
Voice 4: For the will to imagine another world is possible,
we light this candle.
Voice 5: For the fullness of the Holy Spirit,
we light this candle.
Voice 6: For the work of birth we share on Christmas,
we light this candle.
(the fourth Advent Candle is lit)

Hymn: VU 6 A Candle is Burning verses 1-4

A candle is burning, a flame warm and bright,
a candle of hope in December’s dark night.
While angels sing blessings from heaven’s starry sky
our hearts we prepare now, for Jesus is nigh.

A candle is burning, a candle of peace,
a candle to signal that conflict must cease:
for Jesus is coming to show us the way;
a message of peace humbly laid in the hay.

A candle is burning, a candle of joy,
a candle to welcome brave Mary’s new boy.
Our hearts fill with wonder and eyes light and glow
As joy brightens winter like sunshine on snow.

A candle is burning, a candle of love,
a candle to point us to heaven above.
A baby for Christmas, a wonderful birth,
For Jesus is bringing God’s Love to our earth.

Micah 5: 2-5a

Canticle 18 (Luke 1: 47-55)
The Annunciation and Magnificat
(Holden Evening Prayer)

One voice:
An angel went from God, to a town called Nazareth to a woman whose name was Mary.
The angel said to her, “Rejoice O highly favored, for God is with you.
You shall bear a child, and his name shall be Jesus, the Chosen One of God Most High”
And Mary said, “I am the servant of my God, I live to do your will.”

Everyone:

My soul proclaims your greatness, O God,
and my spirit rejoices in you,
You have looked with love on your servant here
and blessed me all my life through.

Great and mighty are you, O Holy One,
strong is your kindness evermore.
How you favor the weak and lowly one,
humbling the proud of heart.

You have cast the mighty down from their thrones,
and uplifted the humble of heart,
You have filled the hungry with wondrous things,
and left the wealthy no parts.

Great and mighty are you, O Faithful One,
strong is your justice, strong your love.
As you promised to Sarah and Abraham,
kindness for-ever-more.

My soul proclaims your greatness, O God,
and my spirit rejoices in you,
You have looked with love on your servant here
and blessed me all my life through.

Hebrews 10: 5-10

Hymn: MV 120 My Soul Cries Out

My soul cries out with a joyful shout
that the God of my heart is great,
And my spirit sings of the wondrous things
that you bring to the ones who wait.
You fixed your sight on your servant's plight,
and my weakness you did not spurn,
so from east to west shall my name be blest.
Could the world be about to turn?

My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn!

Though I am small, my God, my all,
you work great things in me,
and your mercy will last from the depths of the past
to the end of the age to be.
Your very name puts the proud to shame,
and to those who would for you yearn,
you will show your might, put the strong to flight,
for the world is about to turn.

My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn!

From the halls of power to the fortress tower,
not a stone will be left on stone.
Let the king beware for your justice tears
ev'ry tyrant from his throne.
The hungry poor shall weep no more,
for the food they can never earn;
there are tables spread, ev'ry mouth be fed,
for the world is about to turn.

My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn!

Though the nations rage from age to age,
we remember who holds us fast:
God's mercy must deliver us
from the conqueror's crushing grasp.
This saving word that our forebears heard
is the promise which holds us bound,
‘til the spear and rod can be crushed by God,
who is turning the world around.

My heart shall sing of the day you bring.
Let the fires of your justice burn.
Wipe away all tears for the dawn draws near,
and the world is about to turn!

Sermon / Reflection

Offertory Hymn: VU 1 O Come, O Come Emmanuel (v. 1, 3, 5, 6, 7)

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
and ransom captive Israel
that mourns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, great God of might,
who to your tribes on Sinai’s height
in ancient times once gave the law
in cloud, and majesty, and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O Key of David, come,
and open wide our heavenly home;
make safe the way that leads on high,
and close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O Dayspring, from on high,
and cheer us by your drawing nigh;
disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
and death’s dark shadow put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Desire of nations, bind
all peoples in one heart and mind,
O Bid our sad divisions cease,
and be for us our Prince of Peace.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, O Israel.

VU 581 When we are Living v2

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn: VU 60 O Come All Ye Faithful (English and Kwak’wala)

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
come and behold him, born the King of angels:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

Glory to God in the highest:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning;
Jesus, to thee be all glory given;
word of the Father, now in flesh appearing:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord.
