THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.

To us a child is born.
O come let us celebrate.

Hymn: VU 35 Good Christian Friends, Rejoice

Good Christian friends, rejoice
with heart and soul and voice!
Give ye heed to what we say:
News! News! Jesus Christ is born today.

Ox and ass before him bow,
and he is in the manger now.
Christ is born today!
Christ is born today!

Good Christian friends, rejoice
with heart and soul and voice!
Now ye hear of endless bliss:
Joy! Joy! Jesus Christ was born for this!

He hath opened heaven's door,
and we are blest for evermore.
Christ was born for this!
Christ was born for this!

Good Christian friends, rejoice
with heart and soul and voice!
Now ye need not fear the grave:
Peace! Peace! Jesus Christ was born to save!

Calls you one and calls you all
to gain his everlasting hall.
Christ was born to save!
Christ was born to save!

Words: Latin, 14th century; trans. John Mason Neale. Music: German melody, harm. Gary Alan Smith.

Sharing the Peace:

The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.
(We share the peace in physically distant but socially cohesive way.)

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED

Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as scripture is read the Word proclaimed.
Amen.

Hebrew Scripture 1 Samuel 2: 18-20, 26

Psalm 148 VU 871

Refrain: Let the whole creation cry, “Glory be to God on high.”
Praise God from the heavens; give praise in the heights! Give praise, all you angels; praise God, all you hosts!
Praise God, sun and moon, give praise, stars and lights! Praise God, farthest heavens, and all waters beyond heaven!
R: Let the whole creation cry, “Glory be to God on high.”

Let all things praise the Holy One, at whose command they were created, who established them for all time, setting bounds, which cannot be passed.
Praise God from the earth, great sea creatures and ocean depths, lightning and hail, snow and frost, gales that obey God’s decree,
all mountains and hills, all fruit trees and cedars, wild animals and cattle, creatures winged and earth-bound,
sovereigns who rule earth and its people, all who govern and judge this world, young men and women alike, old people and children together!
R: Let the whole creation cry, “Glory be to God on high.”

Let all things praise the name of God, the name above every other, whose splendor covers heaven and earth.
You give strength to your people, songs of praise to your faithful, to Israel, the people dear to your heart.
R: Let the whole creation cry, “Glory be to God on high.”

Epistle: Colossians 3:12-17

HYMN: VU 74 What Child Is This

What child is this, who laid to rest,
on Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
while shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud,
the Babe, the Son of Mary!

Why lies he in such mean estate
where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear; for sinners here
the silent Word is pleading.

This, this is Christ the King,
whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud,
the Babe, the Son of Mary!

So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh;
come, one and all, to own him.
The King of Kings salvation brings;
let loving hearts enthrone him.

This, this is Christ the King,
whom shepherds guard and angels sing;
haste, haste to bring him laud,
the Babe, the Son of Mary!

Words: William Chatterton Dix Music: English melody; harm. Attrib. John Stainer

Sermon Reflection

Affirmation of Faith:

Hear, O Israel,
the Lord our God, the Lord is one.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,
with all your mind, and with all your strength.

This is the first and the great commandment.
The second is like it: Love your neigbour as yourself.
There is no commandment greater than these.

Offertory Hymn: VU 69 Away in a Manger

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,
the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
but little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
I love you, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky,
and stay by my side until morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask you to stay
close by me for ever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in your tender care,
and fit us for heaven, to live with you there.

Words: Author unknown Music: William James Kirkpatrick; arr. Desmond Hassell

Offering Response: VU 64 O Little Town of Bethlehem

O little town of Bethlehem,
how still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
the silent stars go by;
yet in thy dark streets shineth
the everlasting light;
the hopes and fears of all the years
are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary;
and gathered all above,
while mortals sleep, the angels keep
their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars, together
proclaim the holy birth,
and praises sing to God the King,
and peace to all on earth.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,
descend to us, we pray;
cast out our sin, and enter in;
be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
the great glad tidings tell;
O come to us, abide with us,
our Lord Emmanuel.

Words: Phillips Brooks Music: Lewis Henry Redner

Prayer over the Gifts

Prayers of the People:
In our Shared Ministry Church Cycles of prayer, we pray for Anna our bishop, for Linda our Primate and for Mark our National Indigenous Archbishop. We pray for the congregation of the Parish of Central Saanich and the Rev. Lon Towstego. We pray at Christmas, for the birth of Christ in the world and in our lives.

Goodness is stronger than evil;
Love is stronger than hate;
Light is stronger than darkness;
Life is stronger than death;
Victory is ours victory is ours
through Him who loves us.
Victory is ours victory is ours
through Him who loves us.

We pray for all in authority, Elizabeth our Queen, for Mary our Governor General, for Justin our Prime Minister, John our Premier, Denis our mayor, Kwagutl Chief Ross Hunt Jr., Gwa’sala ‘Nakwaxda’wx Chief Paddy Walkus and Quatsino Chief Tom Nelson. We pray that their decisions will benefit the common good, especially to support the marginalized members of our society.

Goodness is stronger than evil;
Love is stronger than hate;
Light is stronger than darkness;
Life is stronger than death;
Victory is ours victory is ours
through Him who loves us.
Victory is ours victory is ours
through Him who loves us.

(In joy and humility let us pray to the creator of the universe, saying, “Lord, grant us peace.”)

... hear us, O Lord.
Lord, grant us peace.

Goodness is stronger than evil;
Love is stronger than hate;
Light is stronger than darkness;
Life is stronger than death;
Victory is ours victory is ours
through Him who loves us.
Victory is ours victory is ours
through Him who loves us.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn: Common Praise #450 You Call Us, Lord, to Be

You call us, Lord, to be
a people set apart,
to feel with thoughtful mind
and think with tender heart.
Thus chosen, now, O Lord, we ask
for faith in your unfailing grace
to make us equal to the task.

You call us, Lord, to care
for self and neighbour too,
to take the risk, and dare
to show what love can do.
Thus chosen, now, O Lord, we ask
for faith in your unfailing grace
to make us equal to the task.

You call us, Lord, to be
good stewards of the earth;
to tend to it as a place
of blessedness and worth.
Thus chosen, now, O Lord, we ask
for faith in your unfailing grace
to make us equal to the task.

You call us, Lord, to serve:
to die that we may live,
to know we best receive
when joyfully we give.
Thus chosen, now, O Lord, we ask
for faith in your unfailing grace
to make us equal to the task.

Words: Jane Manton Marshall Music: John David Edwards

The Blessing and Dismissal:

May the God of infinite goodness ...

Glory to God,
whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing thro ugh the power of the Holy
Spirit.

Thanks be to God. Gilakas’la

Three-fold Amen
