THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

One: Lord, open our lips,
All: And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
One: O God, make speed to save us.
All: O Lord, make haste to help us.

All: Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be for ever.
Amen. Alleluia!

Hymn: VU 48 Hark the Herald Angels Sing

Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King,
peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled!“
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
join the triumph of the skies;
with the angelic hosts proclaim,
"Christ is born in Bethlehem!"
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
late in time behold him come,
offspring of a virgin's womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
hail the incarnate deity,
pleased with us in flesh to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail, the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
risen with healing in his wings.
Mild he lays his glory by,
born that we no more may die,
born to raise us from the earth,
born to give us second birth.
Hark! the herald angels sing,
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Words: Charles Wesley; Music: Felix Mendelssohn; adapt. William Hayman Cummings.

The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us:
O come, let us worship.

Jubilate Psalm 100

Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; *
serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song.
Know this: The Lord himself is God; *
he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; *
give thanks to him and call upon his name.
For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; *
and his faithfulness endures from age to age.

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED

Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as scripture is read the Word proclaimed.
Amen.

Hebrew Scripture Jeremiah 31: 7-14

Psalm 147: 12-20 VU 871 (Part Two)

Refrain: Sing to God in great thanksgiving.

Hallelujah, O Jerusalem!
Zion, praise your God.
For God has strengthened the bars of your gates, and blessed your children within you.
God has established peace within your borders, and filled you with the finest wheat.
R: Sing to God in great thanksgiving.

You send your word to the earth, O God; your command runs swiftly.
You give snow like wool, and sprinkle hoar-frost like ashes.
You scatter hailstones like bread-crumbs; you send the cold, and the waters stand frozen.
You utter your word and the ice melts; you blow with your wind and the waters flow.
You make know your word to Jacob, your statutes and decrees to Israel.
You have not done this for any other nation, nor have you taught them your laws.
R: Sing to God in great thanksgiving.

HYMN: VU 68 All Poor Ones and Humble

All poor ones and humble and all those who stumble,
come hastening, and feel not afraid;
for Jesus, our treasure, with love past all measure,
in lowly poor manger was laid.
Though wise men who found him laid rich gifts around him,
yet oxen they gave him their hay,
and Jesus in beauty accepted their duty;
contented in manger he lay.

Then haste we to show him the praises we owe him;
our service he neʼer can despise;
whose love still is able to show us that stable,
where softly in manger he lies.

The Christ Child will lead us, the Good Shepherd feed us
and with us abide till his day.
Then hatred he'll banish; then sorrow will vanish,
and death and despair flee away.
And he shall reign ever, and nothing shall sever
from us the great love of our King;
his peace and his pity shall bless his fair city;
his praises we ever shall sing.

Then haste we to show him the praises we owe him;
our service he neʼer can despise;
whose love still is able to show us that stable,
where softly in manger he lies.

Sermon Reflection

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again
to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Offertory Hymn: CP 146 ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime

'Twas in the moon of the winter time
when all the birds had fled,
that mighty Gitchi Manitou
sent angel-choirs instead;
before their light the stars grew dim,
and wandering hunters heard the hymn:
Jesus, your King is born, Jesus is born,
in excelsis gloria.

Within a lodge of broken bark
the tender babe was found,
a ragged robe of rabbit skin
enwrapped his beauty round;
but as the hunter braves drew nigh,
the angel song rang loud and high:
Jesus, your King is born, Jesus is born,
in excelsis gloria.

The earliest moon of wintertime
is not so round and fair
as was the ring of glory on
the helpless infant there.
The chiefs from far before him knelt
with gifts of fox and beaver pelt.
Jesus, your King is born, Jesus is born,
in excelsis gloria.

O children of the forest free,
beloved of Manitou;
the holy child of earth and heaven
is born today for you.
Come kneel before the radiant boy,
who brings you beauty peace and joy:
Jesus, your King is born, Jesus is born,
in excelsis gloria.

Words: Jean de Brebeuf; English trans. Jesse Edgar Middleton; Music: French folksong, 16th century; harm. Frederick F. Jackisch.

Collect

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn: VU 76 See amid the Winter’s Snow adapted

See amid the winter’s snow,
Born for us on earth to know.
See the tender lamb appears,
Promised from eternal years.

Hail, thou every blessed morn!
Hail, thou song of life reborn!
Sing in stables far and near,
Comes the daybreak ringing clear!

Lo within a manger lies,
Gift of Heaven, Earth’s surprise.
Mighty weakness, gentle strength,
Wordless tune of endless length.

Hail, thou every blessed morn!
Hail, thou song of life reborn!
Sing in stables far and near,
Comes the daybreak ringing clear!

Child of Heaven, Child of Earth,
Is there but one holy birth?
Love so simple, so unbound,
Can but holy wrap us ‘round?

Hail, thou every blessed morn!
Hail, thou song of life reborn!
Sing in stables far and near,
Comes the daybreak ringing clear!

See amid the winter’s sleep,
All the world in slumber deep,
Springs the dawn across the sky,
To a newborn’s piercing cry.

Hail, thou every blessed morn!
Hail, thou song of life reborn!
Sing in stables far and near,
Comes the daybreak ringing clear!

Words: adapt. From Edward Caswall’s original by Linnea Good; Music: John Goss.
