Call to Worship

A star shining brightly in the East,
discovered by those who have eyes to see the unusual and the challenging.
A journey into unknown territory,
taken by those who have courage and curiosity.
An encounter with an evil, commanding presence,
evil that was faced, yet resisted with care.
The Holy One recognized, despite humble origin,
the glory of the gifts, given to God’s Chosen Child.
Come, let us worship.

Opening Prayer

Hymn: VU 35 Good Christian Friends Rejoice

Good Christian friends, rejoice
with heart and soul and voice!
Give ye heed to what we say:
News! News! Jesus Christ is born today.

Ox and ass before him bow,
and he is in the manger now.
Christ is born today!
Christ is born today!

Good Christian friends, rejoice
with heart and soul and voice!
Now ye hear of endless bliss:
Joy! Joy! Jesus Christ was born for this!

He hath opened heaven's door,
and we are blest for evermore.
Christ was born for this!
Christ was born for this!

Good Christian friends, rejoice
with heart and soul and voice!
Now ye need not fear the grave:
Peace! Peace! Jesus Christ was born to save!

Calls you one and calls you all
to gain his everlasting hall.
Christ was born to save!
Christ was born to save!

Words: Latin, 14th century; trans. John Mason Neale. Music: German melody, harm. Gary Alan Smith.

Collect

Prayer of confession:

King Herod was frightened and threatened by the birth of the Christ child.
All of Jerusalem was frightened with him.
We all act out of fear, sometimes, in our lives.
We can be afraid of losing power, identity, privilege, things we value.
Fear drives us away from God.
Help us, O God, to suppress our fears and to act out of love and light.

Isaiah 60: 1-6 Arise, Shine VU 886 with refrain

Refrain: Arise, be clothed in the light.
Arise be clothed in the light.
Your light has come.
Your light has come. Hallelujah.

Arise, shine, for your light has come.
God’s glory has risen among you.
Behold, darkness covers the earth,
and thick clouds its peoples.
But upon you God shall rise.
God’s glory will appear among you.
Nations will walk by your light,
their rulers by the brightness of your rising.
R: Arise, be clothed in the light.
Arise be clothed in the light.
Your light has come.
Your light has come. Hallelujah.

Raise your eyes and look around
All gather together, all come to you.
They will bring your sons from afar.
They will carry your daughters like babes in arms.
Then you will see and be radient.
Your heart will thrill and rejoice,
because they will bring you the sea’s bounty.
The wealth of nations shall come to you.
A multitude of camels will cover you,
the young camels of Midian, and Ephah, and Sheba.
They will bring gold and frankincense,
and will herald God’s glory.
R: Arise, be clothed in the light.
Arise be clothed in the light.
Your light has come.
Your light has come. Hallelujah.

Your land will no longer hear the cry “Violence!”
nor “Ruin and Destructions” your borders,
But you will call your walls, “Salvation,”
and your gates, “Praise.”
No more will you need the sun for your light by day,
nor the moon’s brightness by night,
but God will be your everlasting light.
Your God will be your glory.
R: Arise, be clothed in the light.
Arise be clothed in the light.
Your light has come.
Your light has come. Hallelujah.

Psalm 72: 1-7, 10-14 VU 790

Refrain: Hail to God’s own anointed, who rules in equity.
Give the ruler you justice, O God, and your righteousness to the royal heir,
for judging your people rightly, and upholding the poor with justice;
that the mountains may bring forth peace for the people,
and the hills, prosperity with justice.
R: Hail to God’s own anointed, who rules in equity.

May your anointed defend the cause of the poor among the people,
save the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor.
May your anointed live as long as the sun endures, as long as the moon from age to age.
May your anointed be like rain falling upon the grass, like showers that water the earth.
may your anointed be one in whose days justice shall flourish and peace abound till the moon is no more.
R: Hail to God’s own anointed, who rules in equity.

May the rulers of Tarshish and the isles pay tribute, the monarchs of Sheba and Seba bring gifts.
May all rulers do homage, and all nations render service.
For your anointed shall deliver the needy when they cry, the poor and those who have no helper.
Your anointed shall have pity on the weak and the needy, and save the lives of the poor.
From oppression and violence your anointed shall redeem their life.
and count as precious their blood.
R: Hail to God’s own anointed, who rules in equity.

Refrain words and music Johann Crüger.

Ephesians 3: 1-12

Hymn: VU 91 The First Nowell Verses 1-5

The first Nowell the angel did say
was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
in fields where they lay a-keeping their sheep
on a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,
born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star,
shining in the east, beyond them far;
and to the earth it gave great light,
and so it continued both day and night.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,
born is the King of Israel.

And by the light of that same star
three wise men came from country far;
to seek for a king was their intent,
and to follow the star wherever it went.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,
born is the King of Israel.

This star drew nigh to the northwest,
o'er Bethlehem it took its rest,
and there it did both stop and stay,
right over the place where Jesus lay.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,
born is the King of Israel.

Then entered in those wise men three
full reverently upon their knee,
and offered there in his presence
their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,
born is the King of Israel.

Gospel Matthew 2: 1-12

Sermon / Reflection

Offertory Hymn: VU 82 A Light is Gleaming

A light is gleaming,
spreading its arms throughout the night,
living in the light.
Come share its gladness,
God’s radiant love is burning bright,
living in the light.

When light comes pouring into the darkest place,
it hurts our eyes to see the glow.
Sometimes a word of hope reminds us of our fears,
our memories and tears.

A light is gleaming,
spreading its arms throughout the night,
living in the light.
Come share its gladness,
God’s radiant love is burning bright,
living in the light.

When night is round us and every shadow grows,
a star is there to light our way.
It tells a story of Jesus who came near to say:
“God’s light will ever stay.”

A light is gleaming,
spreading its arms throughout the night,
living in the light.
Come share its gladness,
God’s radiant love is burning bright,
living in the light.

And Jesus showed us a brighter path to walk.
He showed us things we hadn’t seen.
Now we, like Jesus, can help creation shine,
and this will be a sign:

A light is gleaming,
spreading its arms throughout the night,
living in the light.
Come share its gladness,
God’s radiant love is burning bright,
living in the light.

So let us live in the brightness God has giv’n,
and let us rise to see the dawn.
We trust that God is here a sparkle and a blaze,
warming all our days.

A light is gleaming,
spreading its arms throughout the night,
living in the light.
Come share its gladness,
God’s radiant love is burning bright,
living in the light.

Words and music: Linnea Good.

Offertory Response: VU 540 Grant Us God the Grace

Grant us, God, the grace of giving,
with a spirit large and free,
that ourselves and all our living
we may offer faithfully.

Prayer over the Gifts

As the magi brought gold,
so we bring these gifts.
As the magi brought frankincense,
so we bring our prayers.
As the magi brought myrrh,
so we bring our lives to you, O God. Amen

Intercessions & Thanksgivings

In our Shared Ministry Church Cycles of prayer, we pray for Anna our bishop, for Linda our Primate and for Mark our National Indigenous Archbishop. We pray for the communities of St. George at Kingcome Inlet, Wakeman, Hopetown, & Gilford Island. We also pray for Okanagan Japanese United, Oliver United, O’man’s Nam’a (We Are One) Plant (Port Hardy), Our Place Society (Victoria), Osoyoos United

We pray for all in authority, ...We pray that their decisions will benefit the common good, especially to support the marginalized members of our society.

Minute for Mission

God of compassion, we bring our prayers to you for all the precious gifts we receive:....
(Silence for reflection)

We bring these prayers to you, along with all those which remain unspoken, trusting that you have received them all with mercy and grace.

We are both pilgrims who journey and innkeepers who give travellers a place of sanctuary. We keep our hearts open to the transformation of the journey and the transformation of giving warm welcome. Amen

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in Heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in Heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom,
the power and the glory are yours
now and forever. Amen.

Hymn: VU 79 Arise, Your Light is Come

Arise, your light is come!
The Spirit's call obey;
show forth the glory of your God,
which shines on you today.

Arise, your light is come!
Fling wide the prison door;
proclaim the captive’s liberty,
good tidings to the poor.

Arise, your light is come!
All you in sorrow born;
bind up the broken-hearted ones
and comfort those who mourn

Arise, your light is come!
The mountains burst in song!
Rise up like eagles on the wing;
God’s power will make us strong.

Words: Ruth Duck, Music: William H. Walker.

Blessing
May God be a guiding star before you, a glorious song above you, a gentle path below you, a galvanizing voice behind you wherever you may journey.
Amen. Thanks be to God. Gilakas’la
