THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship

Loving God, our light our salvation,
whom shall we fear?
Loving God, our light our salvation,
stronghold of life.
Loving God, our light our salvation,
shelter in every trouble.
One thing we ask of our God,
that we may live in your house all the days of our lives.
Loving God, our light our salvation,
come and be home to us.

Hymn: VU 409 Morning has Broken

Morning has broken like the first morning,
blackbird has spoken like the first bird.
Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning!
Praise for them, springing fresh from the Word!

Sweet the rain's new fall sunlit from heaven,
like the first dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden,
sprung in completeness where God's feet pass.

Ours is the sunlight! Ours is the morning
born of the one light Eden saw play!
Praise with elation, praise every morning,
God's recreation of the new day!

  • Words: Eleanor Farjean; Music: Gaelic melody; harm. Alec Wyton.

Collect

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutlilala’s! Listen deeply!

Listen to the word that God has spoken,
listen to the One who is close at hand,
listen to the voice that began creation;
listen even if you don’t understand!

  • Words and music: Anonymous

Hebrew Scripture: Genesis 15: 1-12, 17-18

Psalm 27: VU 754

Refrain: God is my light and saving health, I shall not be afraid.
God is my light and my salvation, whom then shall I fear?
God is the stronghold of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?
When the wicked close in to devour me,
it is they, my enemies and my foes, who stumble and fall.
If an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not be afraid;
if war should arise around me, even then I will not be dismayed.
R: God is my light and saving health, I shall not be afraid.

One thing I have asked of God, for which I long: that I may dwell in God’s house all the days of my life,
to gaze on your beauty, O God, and to seek you in your temple.
For in the time of trouble you will give me shelter;
you will hide me under the cover of your tent, you will set me high upon a rock.
And now you have raised my head above my enemies round about me.
Therefore I will offer in your dwelling a sacrifice with great gladness.
R: God is my light and saving health, I shall not be afraid.

Hear my voice, O God, when I call; have mercy and answer me. Your face, O God, I seek.
Do not hide your face from me; do not reject your servant in anger, you who have been my helper.
Do not cast me off, or forsake me, O God my saviour.
Though my father and mother forsake me, my God will take me up.
R: God is my light and saving health, I shall not be afraid.

Teach me your way, O God,
lead me on a level path, safe from those who lie in wait for me.
Do not me up to the will of my enemies,
for liars and false witnesses arise against me.
I believe that I shall see God’s goodness in the land of the living.
Wait for God, be strong, and take courage, yes, wait for God!
R: God is my light and saving health, I shall not be afraid.

  • Refrain Words and music Jeremiah Clarke.

Hymn: VU 121 Tree of Life and Awesome Mystery (v. 1, 3, 4, 2nd Lent)

Tree of Life and awesome mystery,
in your death we are reborn,
though you die in all of history,
still you rise with every morn,
still you rise with every morn.

We remember truth once spoken,
love passed on through act and word,
every person lost and broken
wears the body of our Lord,
wears the body of our Lord.

Gentle Jesus, mighty Spirit,
come inflame our hearts anew,
we may all your joy inherit
if we bear the cross with you,
if we bear the cross with you.

In our call to be a blessing,
may we be a blessing true;
may we live and die confessing
Christ as Lord of all we do,
Christ as Lord of all we do.

Sermon Reflection

Confession, Lament, Healing:

MV 79 Spirit Open My Heart

Spirit, open my heart
to the joy and pain of living.
As you love may I love,
in receiving and in giving,
Spirit, open my heart.

God, replace my stony heart
with a heart that’s kind and tender.
All my coldness and fear
to your grace I now surrender.

Spirit, open my heart
to the joy and pain of living.
As you love may I love,
in receiving and in giving,
Spirit, open my heart.

Write your love upon my heart
as my law, my goal, my story.
In each thought, word, and deed,
may my living bring you glory.

Spirit, open my heart
to the joy and pain of living.
As you love may I love,
in receiving and in giving,
Spirit, open my heart.

May I weep with those who weep,
share the joy of sister, brother.
In the welcome of Christ,
may we welcome one another.

Spirit, open my heart
to the joy and pain of living.
As you love may I love,
in receiving and in giving,
Spirit, open my heart.

  • Words: Ruth Duck; Music: traditional melody, Ireland; arr. Arthur G. Clyde.

Words of Affirmation
In Christ we are forgiven and made new. Let us place our trust in God’s promise of new and abundant life. Amen.

Prayers of the People
In our Shared Ministry Church Cycles of prayer...

We pray for all in authority...

Minute for Mission / PWRDF

(With confidence and trust let us pray to the Lord, saying, “Lord, have mercy.”)

For ... we pray to you, Lord.
Lord, have mercy.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.
(we share the peace in physically distant yet socially cohesive ways).

Hymn: VU 460: All Who Hunger

All who hunger gather gladly;
holy manna is our bread.
Come from wilderness and wandering.
Here, in truth, we will be fed.
You that yearn for days of fullness,
all around us is our food.
Taste and see the grace eternal.
Taste and see that God is good.

All who hunger, never strangers;
seeker, be a welcome guest.
Come from restlessness and roaming.
Here, in joy, we keep the feast.
We that once were lost and scattered
in communion’s love have stood.
Taste and see the grace eternal.
Taste and see that God is good.

All who hunger, sing together;
Jesus Christ is living bread.
Come from loneliness and longing.
Here, in peace, we have been led.
Blest are those who from this table
live their days in gratitude.
Taste and see the grace eternal.
Taste and see that God is good.

VU 581 When We Are Living v 2

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

  • English translations v. 2 George Lockwood; Music: harmony Carlton R. Young

Prayer over the Gifts
These we have journeyed with today. These we have prayed for today. These we have met today. A unique combination and community.
May the love we have tangled with today, the grace we have woven and the peace we have shared, reflect and belong in your reign, O God.
Receive all we have touched today, all we have given, all we have known as our giving to your realm.
These are our offerings to you forever. Amen

THE SACRED MEAL IS SHARED

Welcome
Because it matters, we all matter, ...

We hold silence and know such silence is all we can give in response to the news of your journey towards the cross. (silence)

Hear us as we sing with the angels:
(MV 203 Kingsfold Communion Set)

O holy, holy, holy, God, O God of time and space.
All earth and sea and sky above bear witness to your grace.
Hosanna in the highest heav’n, creation sings your praise.
And blessed is the One who comes and bears your name always!

This is our thanksgiving for all you have done and will be doing for justice and life for truth and forgiveness for promise and salvation. Amen

Words of remembering
Blessed is our brother Jesus, ...

Prayer of consecration
Hear us, O Christ, ...

And now as our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Please remain in at your seat, communion will be brought to you.)

Sharing of the Elements
As we share the bread, we recall that God will always love us.
As we share the ‘fruit’, we recall that God will never leave us.

Prayer after Communion
Gracious God, at this holy table,
we share in the life of Christ. May we who have been nourished by holy things bear witness to his light, and share in his ministry; this day, every day, in every way. Amen.

Hymn: VU 642 Be Thou My Vision

Be thou my vision, O joy of my heart;
naught be all else to me save that thou art,
thou my best thought, by day or by night,
waking or sleeping thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, my calm in all strife;
I ever with thee, and thou in my life;
thou loving parent, thy child may I be,
thou in me dwelling, and I one with thee.

Be thou my battle shield, sword for the fight
be thou my dignity, thou my delight,
thou my soul's shelter, thou my high tower;
raise thou me heavenward, O power of my power.

Riches I heed not, nor vain empty praise,
thou mine inheritance, now and always;
thou and thou only, the first in my heart,
great God of heaven, my treasure thou art.

Great God of heaven, after victory won,
may I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
still be my vision, O ruler of all.

  • Words: Irish; trans. Mary Elizabeth Byrne; vers. Eleanor H. Hull, alt. Music: Irish traditional melody.

Blessing

Sending Forth
God, lead us, that we may stand firm in faith for justice.
Teach us love, teach us compassion. Above all, out of love and compassion, teach us to act!
AMEN. Gilakas’la

Three-fold Amen
