THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

GATHERING: (John Robbins)
The river of God is full of water.
Let us worship and praise God.

*Hymn: VU 221 Sing Praise to God, who has shaped

Sing praise to God, who has shaped and sustains all creation!
Sing praise, my soul, in profound and complete adoration!
Gladsome rejoice - organ and trumpet and voice
joining God's great congregation.

Praise God, our guardian, who lovingly offers correction,
who, as on eagle's wings, saves us from sinful dejection.
Have you observed, how we are always preserved
by God's parental affection?

Sing praise to God, with sincere thanks for all your successes.
Merciful God ever loves to encourage and bless us.
Only conceive what godly strength can achieve:
strength that would touch and caress us.

Sing praise, my soul, the great name of your high God commending.
All that have life and breath join you, their notes sweetly blending.
God is your light! Soul, ever keep this in sight:
amen, amen never ending.

Words: Joachim Neander, trans. Madeleine Forell Marshall; Music: Stralsund Gesangbuch.

Act of Penitence
(Joe Seemane - Lifelines (adapted)
You asked for my hands that you might use them for your purpose. I gave them for a moment but then withdrew them for the work was hard.
Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.
You asked for my mouth, to speak out against injustice. I gave you a whisper, that I might not be accused.
Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.
You asked for my eyes to see the pain of poverty, I closed them for I did not want to see.
Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.
You asked for my life, that you might work through me. I gave a small part that I might not lose my comforts.
Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.
Your asked for my ears to hearing the groaning of creation and the cries of the poor Overwhelmed, I closed my ears.
Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer.
You asked for my time and I was too busy.
Lord in your mercy, Hear our prayer

Absolution
God forgive our efforts to serve you, only when it is convenient to do so. Only in the places where it is safe for us to do so, And only with those who make it easy Strike the hard rock of our hearts that rivers of life may flow through us. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as Scripture is read.

Hebrew Scripture (The Torah): Exodus 17: 1-7

Psalm 78: 1-4, 12-16 VU 792
Refrain: We will tell new generations of the wonders God has done.
Give heed to my teaching, O my people, turn your ears to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable; I will reveal the hidden meaning of things in the past.
What we have heard and known, what our parents have told us, we will not hide from their grandchildren,
but declare to the next generation the testimony that you gave to Jacob and the law you appointed in Israel, which you commanded them to teach to their children,
that the next generation might know them, children yet unborn, and these in turn should arise, and tell their children,
that they should put their trust in you, and not forget your great deeds, but keep all your commandments.
R: We will tell new generations of the wonders God has done.

Marvellous things you did in the sight of our ancestors, in the land of Egypt, in the plain of Zoan.
You divided the sea and let them go through, and made the waters stand up like a wall.
By day you led with a cloud, and all the night long with a beacon of fire.
You split rocks in the wilderness, and gave drink in plenty as from the great deep.
You brought streams out of the rock,
and made water run down like rivers.
R: We will tell new generations of the wonders God has done.

Epistle Philippians 2: 1-13

*Hymn: VU 625 I Feel the Winds

I feel the winds of God today;
today my sail I lift,
though heavy, oft with drenching spray
and torn with many a rift;
if hope but light the water’s crest,
and Christ my bark will use,
I’ll seek the seas at his behest,
and brave another cruise.

It is the wind of God that dries
my vain regretful tears,
until with braver thoughts shall rise
the purer, brighter years;
if cast on shores of selfish ease
or pleasure I should be,
O let me feel your freshening breeze,
and I’ll put back to sea.

If ever I forget your love
and how that love was shown,
lift high the blood red flag above;
it bears your name alone.
Great pilot of my onward way,
you will not let me drift.
I feel the winds of God today;
today my sail I lift.

Words: Jessie Adams, altered; Music: English/Irish traditional melody, arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Gospel: Matthew 21: 23-32
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Affirmation of Faith
We believe in a loving God, Whose Word sustains our lives and the work of our hands in the universe.
God is life.
We believe in God’s son among us who brought the seed of life’s renewal. He lived with the poor to show the meaning of love.
Jesus the Christ is Lord.
We believe in the Spirit of Life, Who makes us one with God Whose strength and energy renews our own.
The Spirit is love.
(Camilo Torres, Colombia, ‘Creed’)

Minute for Mission/ PWRDF & Prayers of the People

Leader: Within our darkest night,
People: Let your light shine.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.
(share the peace as you are comfortable)

*Hymn: VU 308 Many and Great

Many and great, O God, are your works,
Maker of earth and sky.
Your hands have set the heavens with stars,
your fingers spread the mountains and plains.
Lo, at your word the waters were formed;
deep seas obey your voice.

Grant unto us communion with you,
O star-abiding one.
Come unto us and dwell with us,
with you are found the gifts of life.
Bless us with life that has no end,
eternal life with you.

Words and music: Dakota hymn (adapted), Joseph R. Renville

*Response: VU 542 We Give You But Your Own

We give you but your own,
what e’er the gift may be;
all that we have is yours alone,
We give it gratefully.

Prayer over the Gifts

*Hymn: MV 212 Sent Out in Jesus Name

Sent out in Jesus' name,
our hands are ready now
to make the earth the place
in which the kingdom comes.
(Repeat)

The angels cannot change a world of hurt and pain
into a world of love, of justice and of peace.
The task is ours to do, to set it really free.
O help us to obey, and carry out your will.

Words and music: traditional song, Cuba

Sending Out:
Creator God Pour out on us the water of life, That we might quench our thirst And draw strength from you. Help us to stand alongside those who struggle daily for clean water, So that all might be refreshed and renewed By your abundant love, Revealed in Jesus the Christ. Amen! Gilakas’la! Amen!

*Three-fold Amen
