THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship (Based on Psalm 104:24–34)
How could we ever tell how good our God is? What would we say? How would we move into such praise? How would it feel to be there together with such joy? Play instruments.

Bring every joy. Come with every bit of delight. Gather it all in this pleasing, commendable, and worthy of excellence, with drum, trumpet, and tambourine. Praise God! Play instruments.

How could we live into God’s love? We could rejoice and shout. We could jump and sing. We could tell the truth and hold space for every emotion. Yes! This is what we praise. Praise God, who gathers us together.

Opening Prayer

*Hymn: VU 374 Come and Find the Quiet Centre

Come and find the quiet centre
in the crowded life we lead,
find the room for hope to enter,
find the frame where we are freed:
clear the chaos and the clutter,
clear our eyes that we can see
all the things that really matter,
be at peace, and simply be.

Silence is a friend who claims us,
cools the heat and slows the pace,
God it is who speaks and names us,
knows our being, face to face,
making space within our thinking,
lifting shades to show the sun,
raising courage when we're shrinking,
finding scope for faith begun.

In the Spirit let us travel,
open to each other's pain,
let our loves and fears unravel,
celebrate the space we gain:
there's a place for deepest dreaming,
there's a time for hearts to care,
in the Spirits lively scheming
there is always room to spare!

Words: Shirley Erena Murray; harmony Ronald A. Nelson.

Prayer of the Day

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as Scripture is read.
Hebrew Scripture: Exodus 32: 1-14

Psalm 106 VU 830
Refrain: O give thanks to God whose love endures forever.
O give thanks, for God is good; God’s love endures forever.
Who can recount your mighty acts, O God, or tell of all your praise.
R: O give thanks to God whose love endures forever.

Blessed are those who act justly; and always do what is right.
Remember me, God, when you show favour to your people, and come to me with your saving help.
May I see the prosperity of your chosen;
May I share the joy of your nation, and exult with the people you have made your own.
R: O give thanks to God whose love endures forever.

We have sinned like our ancestors;
We have erred, and acted wickedly.
They made a young bull at Horeb and worshipped that molten image.
They exchanged the glory of God for the image of a creature that feeds on grass.
They forgot that you were the god who had saved them by your mighty acts in Egypt,
The wonders you had done in the land of Ham, awesome deeds at the Red Sea.
You would have destroyed them had not Moses your chosen one, stood in the breach,
He turned back your wrath from their destruction.
R: O give thanks to God whose love endures forever.

Epistle: Philippians 4: 1-9

*Hymn: VU 375 Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness, calling and free,
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

You moved on the waters, you called to the deep,
then you coaxed up the mountains from the valleys of sleep;
and over the eons you called to each thing:
wake from your slumbers and rise on your wings.

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness, calling and free,
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

You swept thro’ the desert, you stung with the sand,
and you goaded your people with a law and a land;
and when they were blinded with their idols and lies,
then you spoke thro’ your prophets to open their eyes.

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness, calling and free,
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

You sang in a stable, you cried from a hill,
Then you whispered in silence when the whole world was still,
and down in the city you called once again,
when you blew thro’ your people on the rush of the wind.

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness, calling and free,
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

You call from tomorrow, you break ancient schemes,
from the bondage of sorrow the captives dream dreams,
our women see visions, our men clear their eyes,
with bold new decisions your people arise.

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness, calling and free,
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

Words and music: James K Manley.

*Gospel: Matthew 22: 1-14
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Prayers of the People
Minute for Mission/ PWRDF

We thank you,
and we come before you in prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

*Hymn: VU 290 Nada Te Turbe

Nothing can trouble, nothing can frighten.
Those who seek God shall never go wanting.
Nothing can trouble, nothing can frighten.
God alone fills us.

Nada te turbe, nada te͜ espante.
Quien a Dios tiene nada le falta.
Nada te turbe, nada te͜ espante.
Solo Dios basta.
(repeat as directed)

Amen. Gilakas’la Amen.

*Hymn: VU 684 Make Me a Channel of Your Peace

Make me a channel of your peace:
where there is hatred let me bring your love;
where there is injury your healing power,
And where there's doubt true faith in you.

O Spirit grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace:
where there's despair in life let me bring hope;
where there is darkness, only light;
and where there's sadness, ever joy.

O Spirit grant that I may never seek
so much to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love with all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
in giving to all that we receive,
and in dying that we're born to eternal life.

*Three-fold AMEN
