THE COMMUNITY GATHERS BEFORE GOD

Call to Worship (from Psalm 19)
Why do we praise the Holy One?
We look up at the night sky and stand in awe of the created universe.
Why do we praise the Holy One?
We feel the power of the sun on our backs and rejoice in the gathered harvest.
Why do we praise the Holy One?
We rejoice of the wisdom of the inspired writers of the Bible.
Why do we praise the Holy One?
The generations have proclaimed God’s greatness and worked with God’s compassion.

Opening Prayer
Great God, may our voices join the heavens
as we proclaim your call for justice.
May we recognize the abundance of the earth,
and call for equal share among all your creatures.
May we meet you in this place of glory,
As we join you on the way to Jerusalem.
May we celebrate all you have done for us,
And meet you in the suffering of life.

*Hymn: VU 315 Holy, Holy, Holy

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee;
holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in power, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea;
holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Prayer of the Day

THE STORY OF FAITH IS PROCLAIMED
Hutłilala's! Listen deeply as Scripture is read.
Hebrew Scripture: Exodus 20: 1-17

Psalm 19 VU 740-741
Refrain 2: Glory and praise to God whose word brings life!
The heavens declare the victory of God; and the vault of the sky reveals God’s handiwork
One day speaks to another, and night shares its knowledge with night,
And this without speech or language; their voices are not heard.
But their sound goes out to all the lands, their words to the ends of the earth
R2: Glory and praise to God whose word brings life!

In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun which comes out like a bridegroom from under the canopy, like an athlete eager to run the race.
Its rising is at one end of the sky, it runs its course to the other, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
R2: Glory and praise to God whose word brings life!

God’s law is perfect, refreshing the soul,
God’s instruction is sure, giving wisdom to the simple;
God’s precepts are right, rejoicing the heart;
God’s commandment is pure giving light to the eyes;
God’s fear is clean, enduring forever;
God’s judgements are true, every one of them righteous
More desirable than gold, even much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey, pure honey from the comb.
R2: Glory and praise to God whose word brings life!

By them is your servant warned,
For in keeping them there is great reward.
But who can discern unwitting sins?
O cleanse me from my secret faults.
Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins, lest they get the better of me.
Then shall I be clean and innocent of great offense
R2: Glory and praise to God whose word brings life!
All: Let the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O God, my strength and my redeemer.

Epistle 1 Corinthians 1: 18-25

*Hymn: VU 117 Jesus Christ is Waiting

Jesus Christ is waiting, waiting in the streets;
no one is his neighbour all alone he eats.
Listen, Lord Jesus, I am lonely too.
Make me, friend or stranger, fit to wait on you.

Jesus Christ is raging, raging in the streets,
where injustice spirals, and real hope retreats,
Listen, Lord Jesus, I am angry too.
In the kingdom’s causes let me rage with you.

Jesus Christ is healing, healing in the streets;
curing those who suffer, touching those he greets.
Listen, Lord Jesus, I have pity too.
Let my care be active, healing just like you.

Jesus Christ is dancing, dancing in the streets,
where each sign of hatred he, with love, defeats.
Listen, Lord Jesus, I should triumph too.
On suspicion’s graveyard let me dance with you.

Jesus Christ is calling, calling in the streets,
“Who will join my journey? I will guide their feet.”
Listen, Lord Jesus, let my fears be few.
Walk one step before me; I will follow you.

Words: John L Bell

*Gospel: John 2: 13-22
Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon Reflection

Hear O Israel
Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first and the great commandment. The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.

Prayers of the People
Minute for Mission/ PWRDF

Prayer ending: Help us live out such grace in our harmony with one another, and experience again the wonder of your presence in every person we encounter; in Jesus the Christ. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Peace
The peace of Christ be always with you.
And also with you.

*Hymn: VU 581 When We Are Living

When we are living, it is in Christ Jesus,
and when we're dying, it is in the Lord.
Both in our living and in our dying,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

Through all our living, we our fruits must give.
Good works of service are for offering.
When we are giving, or when receiving,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

'Mid times of sorrow and in times of pain,
when sensing beauty or in love's embrace,
whether we suffer, or sing rejoicing,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

Across this wide world, we shall always find
those who are crying with no peace of mind,
but when we help them, or when we feed them,
we belong to God; we belong to God.

English translation: v.1 translation Elsie S. Eslinger v. 2-4 George Lockwood Music: harmony Carlton R. Young.

*Response: VU 540 Grant Us, God, the Grace

Grant us, God, the grace of giving,
with a spirit large and free,
that ourselves and all our living
we may offer faithfully.

Prayer over the Gifts (1 Corinthians 1: 18-25)
In the reality of Christ crucifed, we find hope.
In our faith community, we find faith renewed. In our families, we find a compassionate response to need.
In the reality of Christ crucified , we find hope.
In our local community, we find care for the homeless and hungry. In our giving to the worldwide mission funds, we find support for the poorest.
We pray in the name of the crucified one. Amen.

Commissioning
Go from here spiritually satisfied. Rejoice that in silence and in song you have praised God.
We rejoice!
Rejoice that in the challenge of hearing and reflecting on the Word you have praised God.
We rejoice!
Rejoice that in caring for your own and for those whose names you will never know you have praised God.
We rejoice!
Rejoice that in being ready to confront the exploiters you have praised God.
We rejoice!
Go in peace.
Thanks be to God. Amen! Gilakas’la! Amen!

*Hymn: VU 121 Tree of Life and Awesome Mystery (v. 1,4,5 & 3rd S)

Tree of Life and awesome mystery,
in your death we are reborn,
though you die in all of history,
still you rise with every morn,
still you rise with every morn.

Gentle Jesus, mighty Spirit,
come inflame our hearts anew,
we may all your joy inherit
if we bear the cross with you,
if we bear the cross with you.

Christ, you lead and we shall follow,
stumbling though our steps may be,
one with you in joy and sorrow,
we the river, you the sea,
we the river, you the sea.

Living Water of salvation,
be the fountain of each soul;
springing up in new creation,
flow in us and make us whole,
flow in us and make us whole.

Words and music: Marty Haugen

*Three-fold Amen
